Shortish review before I hit the sack lol Another great show but I do prefer them indoors if I had to choose. Lots of arseholes in the crowd tonight where I was standing that wanted to chat away quite loudly anytime they played a quieter song. Maybe I attract them I dunno lol.........................anyway! Band were on top form tonight even when they tried playing 2 songs at the one time (they fucked up the start of Postcards From Far Away when somebody hit the Viva La Vida switch) but things like that make gigs special for me. Loved the setlist tonight. Jay Z coming on for Lost+ was the highlight for me. Thought he would seeing as its being recorded for Radio 1 and it was amazing! Sound was good where I was although I prefer it a bit louder. Hampden does have shitty sound mind you so maybe the louder it gets the worse it becomes. Not the most boisterous crowd I've ever seen in Glasgow although it looked really special down the front anytime they were on the screen. The screen is fantastic!! Stage is really simple but the screen is just superb. Great vids during most of the songs. Thought Glass of Water's visuals were stunning. The X Factor thing after Yellow was cheesy as but still funny in a sort of watch through your hands cringe way lol. Bit of fun Anyway to sum it up another special gig. Jay Z put in the best support slot I've seen since Red Hot Chilli Peppers supported U2 at Slane Castle (With Coldplay on before them ). The man is amazing!! Oh and I was standing next to Jo Whiley! She is absolutely stunning in the flesh!

Okay ... back at my current 'home' (R#42 would point out that you can't call a hotel home unless you've got WiFi, which I have ).

What can I say?!!?!? Not much I'm afraid as I am still blown away. I guess it will take some time until everything has sunk in ...

Two things I have to mention though! I 'only' showed up at Hampden Park at around 1.45 pm and just two dozen of people were there by then, spread on the different turnstiles. The second thing which stood out was the 'organisation' when getting people to the front of the stage. Running was not allowed, instead they gathered all the fans at some kind of police barrier tape and stewarts walked backwards with the barriertape and kind of 'escorted' everyone to the front. Only the last few meters was a bit of running.

I was soooo happy about this, as I would have failed awfully in the long run and now I was even lucky enough to end up first row really center.

People didn't sit down though so it was standing all the time but since the entry was delayed we only had to wait for another hour until the White Lies took the stage.

Atmosphere was brilliant and people sang along.

Jay-Z entered the stage shortly after 7 pm but honestly, he's definitely NOT my cup of tea. He will never grow on me ... however the audience went wild and loved it ...

There was loads of pushing from behind and for a longer while there was this scottish lass standing behind me, smelling of beer ... yuk!!!

I really had to defend my spot more than once which was a bit annoying but I reckon' that's how it is.

Coldplay came on and everyone went nuts. I just loved it and hardly took photos even though I had such a good spot

Maybe it was just me, but it seemed that Chris was more concentrating on singing (probably because it was recorded for BBC radio) and not that much into 'interacting with the audience front row'? In any way, he spotted my banner during Violet Hill but didn't show any reaction. Later he looked again and had a big grin on his face and then looked up to me (probably to check if it was really me who was holding the banner ). Of course Guy noticed it too and yes ... he had some time for a killersmile again I will sooo miss it

Shortly before VLV was about to start Chris interrupted and said someone had just pushed the wrong button and they had technical difficulties ... don't know what was wrong though ... Maybe R#42 is going to shed some light into this?! Yep ... and when Lost! was on, Jay-Z entered the stage to share it with Coldplay for his bit. The audience went completely crazy! No exaggeration!!!

As for the C-Stage, Chris started with his Glaswegian Rhyming Song but left out the 'fu**ing' bit and filled it in with 'bollocks' and explained that he couldn't sing it on the radio ... I was confused when he led over to Will, as C-Stage usuallly starts either with Green Eyes or Trouble. Now they started with Death Will Never Conquer and played Trouble afterwards.

What really surprised me was how fast the show was over ... I never had this feeling before?! Maybe it was because of standing first row so close to the center?!

I was at Hampden tonight.Thought it was quite poor to be honest. I saw them in 2003 and in 2005 and they were brilliant and blew me away.Tonight just didnt stand up to them. Firstly,i got hit about 3 times with thrown cups of pee and generally there were idiots in the crowd trying to push past to the front. Secondly the sound where i was,was awful.I was just in front of the leg of the C stage and the sound was far too quiet,i remember they were up on the stage at the back and the acoustic guitar sounded really poor. Thirdly going up to the back and using the stage just doesnt work in a stadium it really disjoints everything. Best songs for me were LIJ,Politik and LIT 2.

I saw U2 last month at Hampden and perhaps they have set the bar too high with the 360 tour but Coldplay tonight was nowhere near it.

P.S Hope i dont get flamed for this but its just my honest opinion.

[Choldplayer]

The show was incredible; White Lies were great, Jay-Z better but Coldplay eclipsed them both. I wasn't listening out for how sharp the acoustic guitar was or the volume of the right tom-tom - I was just belting out the words to every song and going loony like a loony in loony-town on loony pills. The band were so enthusiastic throughout, Chris was hilarious, the X-Factor bit went down a treat, the yellow balls and butterfly confetti were glorious.

If I was to pick out any highlights, I would say Fix You, Lost! and Lovers In Japan. But it was all a standout, no song didn't go down well with the fantastic crowd and it might well have been the best night of my life.

The sound seemed perfectly OK to me

[Everything'sNotLost]

Absolutely brilliant concert, easily the best I have ever been to. Thought Jay-Z was awesome. Lost+ was the highlight of the night.

[JayPlay]

Oh. My. Gosh Coldplay's Hampden gig was my first experience ever of seeing the best band in the world live (my first proper concert too for that matter ) and it was officially the best night of my life. Ever. No exaggeration I have loved Coldplay with all of my heart since 4 years ago when my cousin played The Scientist for me on the piano and since then my admiration, love and just general addiction for Coldplay has just grown and grown and grown. And seeing them live, I can fully understand why they've been nominated for so many Best Live Act awards It was... fabulous, fantastic, incredible, amazing, and all the other words for great that I can't think of atm Well to put it simply, I didn't care about the stupid, off-their-heads drunk guys next to us, I didn't care about the bad Hampden sound (which I didn't actually think was that bad ) I didn't care about the fact that I could barely see over the 6ft people in front of me (I'm 5'2"/3"!!!) I just absolutely fell in love with Coldplay all over again after seeing them live. All the songs they played were just stunning, Chris Martin has a beautiful voice (cool falsetto too!) Guy Berryman is truly gorgeous Will Champion was putting his heart and soul (like in Politik!) into the drumming and Jonny Buckland was just incredible !!! I l-o-v-e-d their cover of Billie Jean (so funny when Chris was like 'she thinks that Will is the one'!!!) and... OMG, they were just pure dead class, OK!!! They are brilliant showmen, the butterflies were cool as were the big yellow balls () and ... what more can I say?! If they do a 2010 tour in the UK, there is no way anyone could stop me from going to see them. I've lived the Coldplay live experience and now have really severe withdrawal symptoms!!!!! Listening to a rerun of Jo Whiley's show now and it brings back such good memories Incredible. Just incredible... That is all PS. Thanks for making The Scientist so brilliant, sentimental value coz it was the first Coldplay song I ever heard... Do a tour next year boys, otherwise I may just have to die!!!!

[viva-la-coldplay]

My god, first coldplay gig and i was blown away! Seen them once before at T in the Park but that doesnt count! I wouldnt normally enlist them as one of my fave bands (hence this being only my 2nd post!!) But after hampden i would definitely reconsider! Great show, some funny bits, lost+ was my highlight! My missus is a bit of a short arse so couldnt really see them until they appeared about 5 feet away on the stage in the middle of the pitch so she was chuffed with that! Would love to hear the recording, anyone gonna do the honours and record off radio 1 tommorrow?

[dekyboy83]

Coldplay came to town and I decided with 40,000 other Scots to go greet them. The venue was Hampden which I have covered in a previous post... http://glasgowtheday.blogspot.com/2009/07/o-flower-of-scotland.html

but was good to go back and see it as a concert venue instead...

Once again despite all the rain we have been having Hampden Park was gleaming in the sunshine. The stage was bathed in sunlight as the kit was set up for the support acts.

First support act up was White Lies. And they were really good. Someone to watch out for in the future. As the sun began to set over the stadium and the crowd started to gather the second support act got going... Jay-Z. Now Hip hop not really my thing but he certainly got the crowd going.

Night had fallen. The crowd had gathered. Time for the show... and was a light and sound spectacular as you may have expected... With big screen effects and laser shows Chris Martin and the gang had the crowd singing along to all the favourites like Clocks, Fix You, In My Place... And as they played Yellow giant yellow balloons were launched across the crowd. Somewhat reminiscent of the bubbles that would chase Patrick McGoohan in the Prisoner tv series from the 60's!! A one point the band did come off the main stage to a small stage in amongst the crowd to do some tracks like Trouble and also a cool cover version of Michael Jackson's Billy Jean!! And in Viva la Vida Coldplay now have a genuine crowd chant on their hands!! A chant the crowd would break into at any moment throughout the night!!

As an encore, (after being brought back on stage by more Viva la Vida chanting) what else could it be but The Scientist. And finish it all off with a fantastic firework display from the roof of Hampden!! And with that it was all over. And with the crowd still chanting Viva la Vida all the way home. I had forgotten just how much fun stadium gigs could be. And Chris Martin mentioned a few times how amazing it was to have 40,000 Scots singing along. Also great fun to be one of those Scots!! :-) So thank you to Coldplay for coming to Glasgow and making a crowd happy at Hampden Park!! After the recent disappointment of not getting to the World Cup was good to have something to sing about!! :-)

Be well, be happy!!

Media Reviews

Glasgow Preview: Coldplay's next album set to reflect the band's close bond

I'm backstage at the Esprit Arena in Dusseldorf when rock superstar Chris Martin of Coldplay pops the question.

"Billy, what do you think we should do next? Where should we go with all this?" he asks.

I almost fall off my chair, scrambling to find words of advice.

It's just minutes before Coldplay are to perform before a 50,000 sell-out crowd at the home of German soccer team Fortuna.

The singer fixes me a stare but seems satisfied when I tell him to cement his friendship with band members Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland and Will Champion and build on the foundations of the music made so far.

Coldplay have sold more than 50 million records and hit Hampden Park in Glasgow on September 16 as part of their latest world tour.

The phenomenal success of their four albums - Parachutes (2000), A Rush Of Blood To The Head (2002), X & Y (2005) and Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends (2008) - has elevated them to become one of rock's biggest acts.

But Chris, 32, is still reaching for new goals.

The singer says: "We have to go in a very different direction with our next record. We know what we have to do. The big mistake would be to try to replicate the size of Viva La Vida. We'll probably just rely on the chemistry between us rather than too much musical trickery."

Bassist Guy, 31 - from Kirkcaldy, Fife - is also fired up by the prospect of going back into the studio.

He says: "We've already got lists of song ideas. We never stop writing. We go into the studio with all the best laid plans then what we end up with is not what we intended. It's just exciting to wonder what will come out the speakers in a year's time.

"We have very exciting things lined up. It's time to take our music down different directions and really explore other avenues."

Backstage in Dusseldorf the vibe is so laid back it's verging on the funereal.

Jonny plays in a football match with the road crew. Guy and Will square up for their daily table tennis challenge while Chris gets a haircut.

Iggy Pop or Pete Docherty it's not.

Chris - who married Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow in 2003 - is the constant focus of paparazzi attention.

But the group haven't fallen foul of the sex 'n' drugs rock lifestyle.

Chris says: "A lot of those stories of excess were original in the Sixties and Seventies. But if you do all that stuff in 2009 it's a bit cliched. It's cooler if you're not pretending to be anything you're not."

He adds: "We are good friends. The bigger Coldplay become, the more time we spend in our own little world.Today,we've spent seven hours backstage in the 'ColdplayYouth Club', it feels so strange to think there are 50,000 people just 200 metres away waiting to see us. As friends, we're pretty tight."

Guy agrees. He tells me: "We've become much closer. That's usually the opposite to how it works so we've got something very valuable there. We've been doing this for 12 years so it makes friendships much stronger. " Coldplay have elevated their spectacular Viva La Vida arena show to stadium status.

Chris says, laughing: "We had to work on our muscles for this tour and Jonny has lost some weight which is always a good thing.

"It's our first time in stadiums and the show has been gradually evolving.

I looked to Bruce Springsteen for a few tips although he's definitely in a different ball park to us.

"What I got from watching him is that it's okay to be full on and proud of what you're doing. I find it hard to be proud. The more I see Bruce I learn to be more self confident that people are there to hear OUR songs."

Chris reveals when he met The Boss he couldn't disguise his hero worship.

He says: "The fan came out in me. Even when you don't want it to and you're maybe thinking 'hey, I'm a pop star too'.

"Did I get my arm signed? Absolutely. You can't help it. I go all sheepish. But it's always important to tell people you think they're great. I used to think you should keep it cool. But when I met Bruce I said, 'You're Bruce Springsteen, right? You're incredible'."

Guy has vivid memories of the first time live music inspired him to become a musician.

He says: "The first big gig I saw was Van Halen at Wembley Arena when I was 13. I also went to see Genesis at Knebworth, supported by Lisa Stansfield and The Saw Doctors.

"While I definitely had aspirations to be a musician I never thought I'd ever get to that stage."

Chris' first live music experience was watching punk act Mr Obnoxious play in Yeovil, Somerset.

He says: "They were a Nirvana tribute band and the singer did a pinpoint Kurt Cobain impression.

"All the girls at school went crazy for him. I was 13 and thought, 'Man, this seems better than playing cricket'.

"It doesn't sound like a big gig now but in our town it was the hugest thing ever. That's where I caught the bug." For Guy it will be a special moment when he walks out at Hampden.

He says: "We always enjoy playing in Scotland because crowds there are always significantly louder than other places.

"I shall be expecting no different this time. I miss Scotland and don't get the chance to go there as much as I'd like. When I get time off I plan to hire a car, head for the Highlands and rekindle my relationship with my home country."

Chris is also counting the days to the Hampden gig. The singer has a soft spot for Tunnock's Teacakes and Caramel Wafers - but has promised a svelte, new look.

He says: "There are certain places which are magic for us and they tend to be either Celtic or Hispanic.

"I don't know why. Maybe it's the Tunnock's but I've had to cut down severely. I'm down to six teacakes and three caramel wafers for breakfast -followed by a shake for lunch - otherwise the stage wobbles when I jump. "While recording our album X & Y I bumped into Mani from The Stone Roses and he was carrying a bag of salad.

"I said 'Mani, why are you just having salad?' He replied, 'Chris, no one likes a fat pop star'."

Live review: Coldplay, Jay Z at Hampden Park

Sep 17 2009

ROCKERS Coldplay thrilled Scots fans with a hit-packed set at Hampden last night.

And frontman Chris Martin enlisted the help of X Factor's Simon Cowell to judge the Hampden roar.

Having just sung Yellow with giant yellow balloons bouncing around the pitch and a shower of paper butterflies, Martin told the 40,000 crowd: "Seeing as you sound so great for a cold Wednesday evening, we're going to try something together - Coldplay and 40,000 Scottish people.

"And because you are sounding pretty f***ing awesome, does anyone want to try an X Factor audition and see if we can make it to the X Factor final?"

After a spot of crowd participation, a recording of Cowell from the TV show came on-screen.

He told the crowd: "That was a complete and utter nightmare. I don't know what you were trying to do - it was horrific."

His verdict was met with a barrage of booing before Martin asked: "Let's see if we can make the most noise Hampden Park has ever heard."

After the fans had another go, Cowell appeared on-screen again, saying: "I thought that was bloody fantastic."

Maps on giant screens had honed in on Glasgow as the band arrived on stage waving sparklers. They got going with fans' favourites Violet Hill and Clocks before Martin said: "Good evening, everybody, thank you for letting us come to Hampden."

The 32-year-old danced up a storm as the multi-million-selling band ran through hits such as Fix You, Viva La Vida, Trouble and In My Place.

Earlier, American hip-hop superstar Jay Z and indie rockers White Lies warmed up the crowd.

Brooklyn businessman Jay Z had to work hard, playing to a half-full stadium in stark contrast to the reception he enjoys in the US, where his latest album is competing for No1 spot.

Wife Beyonce had accompanied him to a show in Manchester earlier this week.

But last night, Jay Z had to make do with a ninepiece band for company as he delivered hits including Run This Town and 99 Problems.

Coldplay have gagged guitar legend Joe Satriani over details of a copyright infringement settlement.

He is banned from saying how much he got after they "lifted" sections of his song If I Could Fly.

Gig review: Coldplay / Jay-Z

COLDPLAY/JAY-Z

HAMPDEN PARK, GLASGOW

COLDPLAY may be noted for many things, but an adventurous streak is not one of them. And yet the decision to invite the world's most respected rapper to be their stadium tourmate is both open-minded and risky. And, despite Jay-Z's professed interest ADVERTISEMENT in indie music, his willingness to play second fiddle to a guitar band also appears to be out of character.

However, once you have turned a potentially hostile Glastonbury crowd into putty in your hand, the prospect of mildly bemusing a Coldplay audience cannot be terribly daunting. He and his band came out all guns blazing, and the crowd succumbed by degrees. Jay-Z's catalogue is so varied that if you didn't like one style, there would be something else along in a minute, be it a U2 sample, a bhangra backing, or an old-school soul workout, which made full use of a funky brass section and athletic drumming.

Over the course of a one-hour set which was refreshingly free of the time-wasting posturing which often blights hip-hop shows, the rock/rap collision of 99 Problems was the most charged, climactic number, although arguably the biggest cheer was reserved for the image of a Saltire on the big screen.

The audience swayed to the mellifluous strains of The Blue Danube Waltz, heralding Coldplay's arrival on stage, brandishing sparklers. Laser danced off the rim of the roof and the crowd created a lightshow of their own as mobile phones were duly held aloft.

Coldplay opened their account with the momentous Violet Hill, but even their blandest songs, such as In My Place were boosted by the epic embellishment of massed voices, by frontman Chis Martin's reserves of energy and no less than a galactic panorama emblazoned across the backdrop.

Suddenly, there were huge balloons bouncing around the crowd – and they were all yellow, as the song says. An obvious gambit, perhaps, but more effective than the cheesy X Factor-related routine which followed. Fix You required no gimmicks, again just relying on the emotional power of the 40,000-strong singalong.

Eschewing the anthemic for a moment, God Put A Smile Upon Your Face was rocked out garage band style on a runway into the crowd, and there was a further intimate interlude featuring an acoustic Trouble and a cover of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean on another platform deep in the heart of the crowd.

Jay-Z returned for a brief, mismatched cameo (it would have been rude not to rope him in), but sections of the audience were still singing along to the previous number, a mighty Viva La Vida. By this point, it was almost all over bar the butterfly-shaped ticker-tape shower.

Coldplay are new to this stadium business and could be forgiven for wanting to test out so many of the accepted conventions of such a show (the free CD on the way out was a particularly nice touch). But next time, they might want to try streamlining their surfeit of ideas.

The Live Experience – The music vs the show

Our intrepid reporter Mrs.Morrissey attended last nights Coldplay show at Hampden in Glasgow. We’re not carrying a review because it’s Coldplay and it doesn’t count. You know what Coldplay sound like and, in simplistic terms, you’ll know whether you would have enjoyed it or you wouldn’t have. They are Coldplay. They played all the Coldplay hits, and 50,000 people ohwoahwoahed to that one which sounds like ‘Walking on Broken Glass.’ Coldplay remain, like Snow Patrol, not as risible as Razorlight but still not worth actually listening to.

What did seem interesting – yep, Coldplay gig notwithstanding – was a little set-piece they did. Encouraging singing, Chris Martin said ‘let’s win the X-Factor’ and the crowd sang along, only to be greeted by the visage of Simon Cowell on the big screen, lambasting them in parodic style. This was then repeated, only this time he was full of praise for the second attempt. This pre-recorded segment went down a treat with the audience. Later on there was ticker tape and flashing canons. All the fun of the fair, it seems.

It’s about striking the balance. Coldplay were charging £60 a pop to watch, essentially, four fairly dull blokes batter out some tunes in a stadium. There was little chance of achieving the intensity a new band can generate in a packed, sweaty hall. So they decided to make it a bit more interesting. Who can argue with that?

But yet….it IS a music show. Is there a line where the visuals surpass the sound? It was a huge source of contention between Jagger and Richards as the Stones got bigger, with Jagger up for ever more pageantry and Richards being all about the music, maaaaan.

U2’s live shows are now gargantuan wanks, resembling more and more music theatre and less rock concert. Springsteen’s remain stripped down, all about the songs and how they are delivered. Frankly, many people would have been at both gigs and many would have enjoyed both gigs. You can’t blame a band for trying to at least justify the exorbitant ticket price by making it an experience. But who to say who is right?

Well, you are….let us know…..
