Fan Reviews (Part 1)

All fan reviews have been submitted to us by the members of Coldplaying.com[1], unless stated otherwise.

what can I say? one of the greatest gigs I have ever seen-up there with u2 at the royal court in 83 flaming lips at glasto 2010 and new orders first ever show-I will let people who are more eloquent than me give fuller reviews but for now-thanks coldplay it was worth it all!

[rickleach]

Okay, am currently writing this on a 6am train back to London to go to work, I've had 3 hours sleep and the sub zero tempeartures have not done me much good Remember last year in Exeter when I said queuing in temperatures that low was extremely stupid and I'd never do it again? Well I did, and it was MUCH colder - it was worth it though!!

So I got there initially at 10am, some of the Italian guys were there axe, etc. But it seemed quiet so I went shopping for a bit (well attempted to....since when do shops not open until 11 on a Sunday?!) anyway trusty Primarni was open so I was able to get a blanket and some extra socks

I was browsing Twitter in the queue in Primarni and saw that Chelsea (who had been umming and ahhhing about attending the Newcastle gig since her flight home got cancelled due to the snow) had mentioned that there were 200 extra ticketsgoing on sale at both venues but you had to go there in person to get them, so I offered to get her one and at first she was like "noooo way, is too short notice" then it was "oh let me just look at the train prices" and then "omg they're cheap let me just look at hotels"

Whilst this was going on I had wandered back towards the queue where Craig, Roos and Wisna had joined. Craig was meant to be buying my seated tickets from me but had a standing ticket and just needed another - it turns out I knew someone with a standing ticket so my two seated tickets became available, I immediately told Chelsea who very excited decided she was going to come!

So anyway we stood around chatting for a while, more people joined us Als, Anna it was unbearably cold, we were all taking it in turns to get inside for a while. It seems to really drag in the afternoon, it was so cold and I think we were all trying to over compensate for the fact that we were miserable. It was in fact just as Alison went inside for coffees that the boys turned up at the venue.

Jonny was first, he had a big smile as he went in, everyone else stuck their hand out, which he shook, but I was too shy and didn't Was annoyed with myself afterwards. Next was Will with one of his daughters and his wife, he just walked in quickly with a smile since he was with family. Then it was Phil he chatted a bit before going in (sorry I don't have any pictures of this - we all sort of ran over there and I was unprepared )

Once they were all in, we wandered back over to our queuing spot and sort of loitered for a bit hoping Chris would show up (we saw Vicki and Debs having a cigarette outside too) the others guys had arrived in big blacked out silver cars so it was obvious they were coming, but we looked over and suddenly there was a huge swarm of people around Chris who had seemingly appeared from nowhere! I think he must have walked. I only got a chance to take his picture before he went inside.

We made our way back to the queue and were talking about how few people were in the queue and how it was quite possibly the most pointless all day queue ever when what should happen? The secuirty guy on the door pops his head outside and tells us to all make our way into the foyer he had something tell us! We did, grateful to be out of the horrible cold, I must admit I had a sneaking suspicion it was going to be something good and I wasn't wrong! Chris had heard how long we had been queuing in the cold (did someone in our group tell him?) and had invited us to watch the soundcheck!!! I let out an almight squeee I must admit

So we all get AC/DC at Wembly wristband (because why wouldn't we?! ) and make our way in. Jonny and Guy are on stage noodling, Jonny sort of shyly waves at us and we all very enthusiasticly start waving back People are shouting out song requests to play that night, which he declines very politely...although when someone asks for High Speed Jonny starts playing the riff

Chris bounds on stage not long afterwards in an absolutely fantastic mood and immidiately comes over to chat to us Says hi, thanks us for waiting for so long and then he says "is anyone English?" those of us who are raise our hands and he asks "okay do you think we should play on the X Factor?" and I, at the very horror of that actually occuring, am like "NO!!!!" haha So he turns to me and ask why not. Now there are a million and one reasons why Coldplay should not play the X Factor but could I form a coheriant reason as to they shouldn't? No. And he's looking at me waiting for an answer! I babbed something about how Matt Cardle could actually have a career of worth if it wasn't for the X Factor and how instead he's going to be screwed by Cowell and how that's not what music is about. He seems to accept that as a good reason and says "yeah, yeah that's what a few people think", although argues that we all watch it to which I reply "yes because it's good Saturday night entertainment if you're not going out, not because we believe in it" he chats for a bit longer about the gig and stuff but as he turns to walk back on stage he thanks me for my advice

Although Alison says I didn't so much advise him as order him not to

So they run through a few songs, GoW was first if I'm not mistaken, Chris isn't really singing properly as he's saving his voice but it sounds good, afterwards he asks for his piano to be moved further back so Guy is more visible They also run through CoL, as Guy walks over to play Chris' piano at the start of it, he looks at the keys and laughs and says "they're all different colours I can't play this" and Chris agrees and says that they need to get rid of them before next year. They also perform half of VLV before Chris forgets the lyrics, he's asking Will what they are and running through the verse quickly and Will mimes a puppet on a string to him I think it was during VLV that Chris got out a pocket camera and filmed the band and then us! :cheesey:

The also attempted Christmas Lights, Chris kept messing up during the middle, he did it twice and Will was cracking up at him, in the end Chris had to look at Will who mock baby stepped him through it by counting him in with his drumsticks in a exagerated fashion

Oh also Will's daughter was there, she must have loved Christmas Lights cos she was dancing around for all of it And Chris sang her a song and was waving at her.

After about 45 minutes they decided they needed to get into the soundcheck properly so we were to leave, Chris (and Phil) came to talk to us again People were asking him things I think someone mentioned Life is for Living which Phil said they'd have to bring back next year He was saying goodbye to us all and said "I'm sure I'll see you in the exact same position later" and touched my arm!! I am ashamed to admit I died a little

Massively delayed train so I've just quickly fired offthe second part, sorry if the spelling is dodgy, can't be arsed going back and checking, am tired man

So we made to go back outside again, we begged security to let us wait in the foyer But of course they said no, so they moved the queue that had formed whilst we were inside back (so we were at the front again, very important ) and we had to face the bracing cold again. Chelsea arrived not long afterwards So we passed the remaining time chatting to her excitedly about the soundcheck and her crazy last minute adventure to Liverpool. They took for freaking ever to open the doors, we were all cold and as anyone who has ever been to a gig with me would recognise, my front row anxieties had kicked in

We were finally let in and we legged it and me, Als and Anna got a spot right in between Chris and Jonny, perfect We got chatting to the guys behind us, one of them is on here, Nathan42 and his friend, who were also on the boat trip.

The Choir with No Name were bizarre, but in a good way! They were singing their hearts out and you could tell they were absolutely thrilled to be there! I've got a video ofthem singing Poltik which was good. They also did a few Christmas songs which was nice

After they had finished there were some messages from Crisis and then the roadies started setting up, it seemed to be taking forever and they were well past the stage times they'd posted earlier on the blog, eventually someone came out with a megaphone and said they were having sound problems, it was then we noticed the roadies had stopped working. It was a bit for a while as nothing seemed to be happening, but thankfully the music started up again and the roadies scurried back into action. Phew!

Unfortunately this meant Peter Kay's 10 minute slot was reduced to only a few minutes, but he made a few funny Liverpool jokes and did this hilarious rendition of Good King Wenleslas with us where the top teir was woof, the middle was quack and we were moo

Finally it was time for Coldplay and they bounded onto the stage and launched into In My Place (lucky for them they opened with this, if they'd opened with LIT, Chris may have been surprised to see the anti X Factor girl jump on stage and scream change the effing setlist at him!! )

Chris messed up the end of IMP, he started it again, but then went off on a tangent about how if we were here to see the Panto that usually played in that theatre then we would be sorely disappointed and then just kind of gave up on the end of the song

Yellow was next, played with the usual gusto, great crowd sing along even at that early stage

Chris was busting out the moves during Lost Actually Jonny was too, he was proper shaking his thang whilst he playing the keyboard Chris came down the steps towards us during that song and me and Anna were holding our arms out, we had a running joke that since he'd touched them both at the soundcheck that he had created monsters and must do it again Obviously we didn't actually shout this at him. The security guards looked a bit worried when he came down actually as everyone went a bit mental and think they were worried they were actually gonna have to do some work

GPASYF was next, full version! I've missed the proper version. It was stonking! Chris let us clap the beat the the first verse and was impressed with our efforts. Jonny completely rocked out during the end too! He was really giving it some welly! He's more confident than ever!

CoL was next, excellent as usual followed by TROUBLE!! Ahhhh. Perfection. I can't remember exactly but he messed up somewhere and Will was giggling at him, Will acually spent most of the night giggling at Chris as he messed up quite a lot, he pulled it off though. The "they spun a web for me" singalong was loud and beautiful and Guy had a big smile on his face at the end.

I THINK GoW was next - I can't quite remember as they didn't follow the printed setlist. I remember Chris was sitting at the piano and turned to Jonny and mouthed "glass of Water?" Jonny looked confused and turned to Will who mimed drinking a glass of water Will was all about the miming yesterday

'Til Kingdom Come was next, people were shouting at Chris, two MEN shouted "I LOVE YOU CHRIS!!" at him He thanked the first and the second he said "oh if you got to know me you wouldn't love me, I have nothing but shit lyrics and no personality" Something else was shouted at him which he didn't understand and then he made some jokey comment about Coldplay being shit then back peddled and said something along the lines of "no no i didn't mean that, if there's anyone form radio 4 or journalists or FUCKING bloggers here I was joking, I do not thing Coldplay are shit, I think we're middling to average and have sold so many records thanks to our very handsome bass player and the ten year void in the charts when Take That were split up. Now they're back, we can't complete but goddam we'll keep fucking trying" Everyone was cracking up. He was on top, top, hilarious form.

TKC was beautiful, played acousticly with Will on piano and Guy on harmonica, Chris dedicated it to his dad

SHIVER follwed, Guy and Will left the stage and it was just Chris and Jonny as Guy left the stage Chris said loudly "oh you're going for a fag? Okay" Shiver with the two of them was beautiful. I was filming it but my memory card filled up halfway through Which is a pity cos I missed the best C&J moment ever, so good that me and Anna SQUEALED soooooooooooooooooooooooo loudly, they must have heard us and then collapsed in giggles as we were so embarrassed. I can't even explain it properly but Chris singing "from the moment I wake to the moment I sleep I'll be there by your side just you try and stop me" and gave Jonny SUCH a look. Haha. I think Denise filmed the whole thing so you'll know the moment when you see it cos you'll hear us screach!!

DAAHF followed, which I don't think he messed up, which is unusual as he always seems to mess that one up Then Clocks which was stonking as always and Viva which had an absolutely fantastic sing along that lasted way after the song finished I was so out of breath afterwards. Hard work

Fix you was next which Chris completely and utterly messed up and had to restart. During the middle section Jonny fest he picked up a mic stand and smashed it to smitherines...as you do And hilariously as he was finishing the song at his piano his microphone fell to the floor at Guy's feet. Chris and Guy peeled into laughter and Chris just held the last note until Guy placed it back on the stand

They went off, but Chris said they'd be back, the woah-oa-oahs started back up and everyone was clapping and stamping their feet

They launched into Politik which was absolutely blazing. Followed by The Scientist, which Chris managed to mess up so badly he put his head in his hands and was like "oh fucking hell, we're really trying!" he was giggling though. Also he spent the last two minutes of the song staring behind him at Jonny. Eyes on the job Chris!

He started playing Back for Good then stopped and said "what am I doing, I can't play this, if only we had a genie who would make the best song writer in Britain just appear from the wings" this was when Gary Barlow SHOULD have walked out but there was a slight delay Gary was on piano and singing and Chris sang beautiful backing vocals, we all sang along Bizzarly Peter Kay came back out and started throwing bags of crisps, sweets and BANANAS into the crowd Then he was playing Jonny's keyboard and singing along.

Finally it was Christmas Lights which was flawlessly performed complete with Elivises, Phil, Chris' dad and a third I couldn't place.

Perfect.

Also somewhere, I can't remember where, he started to play a new song and then stopped, all the guys were laughing at him as he must have got it so wrong, he said something like "the new music is atrocious and I can't even fucking play it!"

Oh and I've just remember Chris had all the teirs cheering, he gave the top teir 5, the middle 6 and us 7, then calculated the result (took him longer than maybe it should ) he finally got the answer as 18 and was like "18? That means they were shit and wouldn't make it to the next round of X Factor So he made us do it again. He also called himself a Matt Cardle lookalike

It was honeslty by far the best I have ever, ever seen the boys play. They were on fire, even with all the mess ups it was absolutely stonking!!!

Hi everybody! I`m still speechless, it was unbelievable, amazing and everything, not sure I can write anything more, maybe when I get home. Thank you to all fellow coldplayers whom I`ve met and who made the experience even better! See you at next concerts!

Can't really compete with that review from Mich!

Will try and put some thoughts together later, for now I will just agree with Mich (the Coldplaying Fairy Godmother ) that it was the best I've ever seen them: happy, confident, goofy, yet with rockstar swagger. The mistakes were dealt with in the sweetest, most charming manner and just added to the whole thing.

I think they all, but Chris in particular thrive off a small, intimate crowd, but perhaps Exeter was a little too small. I guess the audience was about double the size last night and it made all the difference.

But also it seemed they seemed really refreshed - the shackles of touring are off, there was no pressure to deliver new material - Chris announced early on that it would be "the greatest hits" last night, then joked "We've only got three so we'll be off in 10 minutes"

I feel so lucky to have been there - and actually glad that I'm an idiot who left her camera at work, it left me free to just enjoy. Although I'm aware that I enjoy other peoples posts from concerts so I tried to tweet during the show, I hope they somehow caught the atmosphere of the night.

When I came out, my initial reaction was "I might never go and see them again" It was so perfect, I doubt it could ever be topped. Of course, when the next tour comes round I'll forget about that. Then Mich will tell me what ridiculous time we're queuing and I'll forget that this morning my feet are still throbbing from yesterday. She's such a bad influence, that girl

Ok, that's enough from my tired brain now. Need food, painkillers, then more sleep....

I made it home to western NY last night about 8:00. The travel to and from Liverpool was harrowing, both ways, but the middle part of the trip was perfection. I almost didn't make it since Amsterdam shut down - I actually was having the Delta ticket agent at JFK rebook me back home but, while on hold, she suggested I check for a Delta Mileage seat and I got the last seat on what turned out to be the last plane into Heathrow before it closed. Hopped a taxi to Euston Station and a train to Liverpool and there I was. In a hotel DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET from the Royal Court Theatre. I spent my Sunday breakfast in the hotel restaurant watching the crew unload and while that was happening, "Gravity" came on over the restaurant's music system. Sweet.

Mich and others have done a fab job of reviewing the show and some of the other goings on so all I'll say is that I feel extremely fortunate to have seen them in this small setting. To be so close (I was at the front of the Circle) that I could see the expressions on their faces while they were playing was a joy. They really seemed to be having a great time at this gig!

But what happened afterward was icing on the cake. I joined Carrie, Chelsea, Craig, Anna, and others for a wait at the stage door (in the freezing cold but hey, who cared?). After a while Security came out and had us form a little lane. First out were Chris's parents who seemed a little hesitant. But as they passed me I said "Mr. Martin! Mrs. Martin! Merry Christmas!" Chris's dad made a beeline over to me and grabbed both of my hands and asked "How did you like the show?" They chatted for a couple of minutes (sometimes my being the Oldest Fan is a good thing!) and then headed for the car.

And after another while Chris came out. Now let me tell you, my first glimpse of him, up close and live, took my breath away. Photos and videos do not do this man justice. He is stunning. He moved slowly along the crowd, stopping for photos and signing autographs. He said "I'll sign anything!" and when a man behind me had him sign his shirt, Chris said "Well, I've gone and ruined that for you!" When he reached me there was a clutch of people around him, so he sort of stopped and leaned against me while he was chatting and signing. He kept on leaning for a good five minutes - and my side and arm will never be the same. He signed my ticket envelope for me and then someone asked him "How's your baby?" Chelsea recounted the conversation he had about Apple, but after he mentioned that she was six I said "I have a grand-niece that age." He turned around and looked at me and said "What??" I repeated myself and said that was a cute age and he said "Yeah, that's cool!" And then he had the conversation about her name that Chelsea described!

I got to join Craig and the others while Phil signed the big poster that Craig had scored, and we all posed for a photo with it (I hope Craig posts it here soon). Phil was adorable and friendly but not dressed for the weather!

Had a 6 a.m. flight on Monday morning so I went back to the hotel for a couple of hours of sleep before the 21-hour trip back, and here I am back at work with a head full of memories. What a great Christmas present.

Happy Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!

[JillyBlue]

The gig was amazing! I was sat on the front row of the circle seats so had a really good view. You could tell all the Choir with No Name were really enjoying singing, they were so moving and I loved their version of Politik! My favourites from the gig were Shiver, God put a Smile Upon Your Face (Jonny really thrashed the life out of that guitar) and Cemetaries of London. Chris was really on top form with the self-deprecating funnyness Afterwards, I waited for the guys to come out until I had to go (I wasn't the one driving home, and therefore didn't have a say when we did so ) Will came out but with his little daughter so no-one pestered him. I've heard since that Chris came out, about quarter of an hour after I left. Oh well, that's my luck

Media Reviews

Coldplay – review (Guardian) Royal Court, Liverpool

"If anyone's here for the pantomime I'm afraid you're gonna have a shit evening," quips Chris Martin, kicking off the first of two gigs for homeless charity Crisis, in "intimate" venues. "Intimate", of course, is a relative concept, but a 1,000-capacity theatre is a small gig for a group who've shifted 50m albums and treat the venue like an arena. The drum sound alone seems to come via the Mersey tunnel.

Coldplay's last album, Vive le Vida, suggests they may now be the world's biggest-selling band, and while U2 and the Stones may still be ahead in tour receipts, Martin's troops are a formidable live act. The £50 tickets (unfortunately touted for 15 times as much) get you a set of greatest hits and songs they haven't played in years, and an evening somewhere between Echo & the Bunnymen, Elton John and Anfield. In My Place raises hands in the air within 30 seconds; the crowd bellow Yellow so loudly Martin can barely get a word in.

Wearing unfeasibly tight trousers and a carnation, the thirtysomething singer is part consummate frontman, part someone stumbling on stage at a wedding party. On record, he can be overearnest; live, he is a hoot, smashing mic stands, accidentally headbutting the microphone, claiming to be listening to Radio 4 through his headphones, and insisting the band are too embarrassed to play anything from their forthcoming fifth album because it is "atrocious". However, they can unleash considerable emotion, not least when the crowd form a hushed choir as Fix You unshowily but poignantly captures the point of the evening.

Martin may wish to come over like a hapless Mr Bean, but he clearly has powers beyond even the average rock god. "If only the pantomime genie could magic up the greatest songwriter in Britain," he sighs, and lo and behold on walks Take That's Gary Barlow for a version of Back for Good, which generates such hysteria you fear for the building. The surreal cast is then joined by Peter Kay, hurling sweets, and no fewer than three Elvises, playing violins.

But perhaps the most significant moment came earlier, when the Choir With No Name – singers of varying ability drawn from "the fringes of society" – brought cheers to the rafters with their heroic, moving renditions of Christmas classics. Meanwhile, the £250,000 raised by these gigs has already established a Crisis centre in Liverpool: while governments do nothing, or worse, it seems that extraordinary events such as this can make a real difference to struggling people's lives.

‘’’ Fans double treat at Coldplay ’’’

COLDPLAY gave fans not one, but two early Christmas pressies last night. The lads surprised gig-goers by wheeling out GARY BARLOW and comedian PETER KAY. For the first of a pair of festive shows CHRIS MARTIN and the gang took to the stage at the Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool. A show in Newcastle follows tonight. Barlow joined the Grammy-winners for a rendition of TAKE THAT track Back For Good, while the larger-than-life funnyman hurled sweets into the crowd. Livepool FC captain STEVEN GERRARD watched the show as well.

The Oracle on 19 December 2010: Crisis Hidden Gig: Coldplay in Liverpool

December 21, 2010 - submitted by Natalie, Belgium
Q. Hi Oracle,
Who did Chris shoutout to during Christmas Lights at the Liverpool Gig? He did sneak something into the lyrics...
Thank you and Merry Christmas!
The Oracle replies:
I awoke to an email this morning from Roadie #42 explaining in case anyone asked about the change in lyrics. Natalie you were the first one to ask closely followed by Eva in the Netherlands...
Chris shouted "Phythers" and then sings "How I always loved you Phythers and I always will".
Phythers is the nickname of Mark Phythian, recording Engineer who worked alongside Producer Ken Nelson on the first three records.
They first met Mark at Parr St. Studios in Liverpool and always loved working with him.
Chris spotted him in the balcony during the song and was visibly thrilled to see him.

Q. Hello Oracle.
I wanted to know, why Peter threw bananas to the crowd last night?
The Oracle replies:
Peter Kay basically took a tin of chocolates and some bananas from the dressing room and started throwing them into the crowd. Being a comedian he was doing it all for fun. Luckily he threw the bananas quite gently so they didn't impact in anyone's face!
