Media Reviews

As far as bona fide rock groups go, there isn’t anyone more polarizing than Coldplay. Accusations run from all out plagiarism of Joe Satriani to simply copying every move U2 makes both artistically and commercially. The quartet from London has received more simultaneous praise and criticism than the last episode of the Sopranos. But undeniable is their worldwide appeal as exemplified by The Viva La Vida Tour, which in support of their fourth studio album of the same name has played 172 total shows throughout 14 legs across Europe, Asia, Oceania, North America, and now Latin America.

The mammoth tour which started June 16, 2008 finally came to an end in Bogota, Colombia on March 4, 2010 in a buzz-filled evening in Simon Bolivar Park. In no mood for tearful goodbyes, Coldplay celebrated their most important chapter coming to a close and look to a bright future ahead. From the opening riffs of “Life In Technicolor” and into “Violet Hill,” the throng at the sold out venue let Chris Martin and company know they were in no mood to be silent as 60,000 voices united to roar “If you love me, won’t you let me know?” into the Colombian skies.

Granted, Martin doesn’t have David Bowie’s elegance, Bruce Springsteen’s mysticism, or Bono’s sunglasses, but Chris Martin is a Picasso to all three. And Thursday, he rocked the crowd in a way it hadn’t been rocked since John Madden bodysurfed the nosebleed seats. His performance showed his ever-growing versatility, simultaneously a rocker and a poet who can pump us up with his roaring anthems and turn us introspective with his somber piano ballads. Martin’s the kind of guy whom we expect to start a “Viva La Vida” chant with 60,000, but with whom we wouldn’t be totally surprised if he brought out Octomom for a chorus of “Wind Beneath My Winds.”

And sure, like Bono he’s one of those celebrities who gets involved with politics and world issues. And maybe you don’t agree with his views. But come on, people. At least his rambles involve a British accent, something we could all use more of in our daily lives. The setlist was complete and well rounded. Involving virtually all of the band’s hits, it also mixed in some rarities like “Shiver” from their debut album Parachutes and even a new track titled “Don Quixote” from their still untitled upcoming album, much to the delight of the crowd. Other standouts from the setlist included the confetti-filled “Lovers in Japan” and the electronic, U2ish medley of “God Put a Smile Up On Your Face”/ “Talk.”

Opening band Bat For Lashes deserves praise. Lead singer Natasha Kahn is a wonderful talent. U2 fans might remember her single “Daniel,” which plays before the band takes stage in their current 360 Tour. Overall, it was a fantastic night of music. The band seemed very happy with the crowd’s energy, as well as putting an end to their most successful chapter yet. And to the Coldplay doubters – to each their own. But the quartet leaves an unmovable impression in today’s musical world.

Coldplay over Bogotá

More than 32 thousand persons participated in the concert of the British alternative rock band Coldplay in the Simon Bolívar Square of Bogotá the night of March 4. Buenas noches parceros! was the greeting of vocalist Chris Martin, and it was enough to gain the appreciation of their Colombian fans. The Londoners created an alternative rock band in 1997 made by Chris Martin, the lead vocals, keyboards and guitar; Jonny Buckland, the lead guitar; Guy Berryman, the bas guitar and Will Champion, drums, backing vocals and other instruments. They became popular in Colombia with albums like Viva la Vida (Long Life Live) or Death and All His Friends of 2008, a production of Brian Eno.

Other is LeftRightLeftRightLeft, a collection of their live concerts in already 25 countries. It was the first time that the popular band performs in Colombia and the night was a success either for the British artists or for the big group of fans that follows the lyrics of songs like Viva la Vida when Martin signs I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing, Roman Calvary choirs are singing, Be a mirror, my sword and shield, My missionaries in a foreign field…

The visitors were accompanied by the Paisa rock band Estados Alterados that made also a great night of acclamations and the also British Bat For Lashes (her real name is Natasha Khan, 29 years old), who debuted in Colombia with her album Two Suns (2006).

The British Coldplay optimism spread to Bogota after a chaotic strike

The British band Coldplay won, passing through Bogota, contagious optimism with its "Live life to citizens who have forgotten the capital for nearly two hours Concert chaos in the city caused by the transit strike.

The London quartet came to the Colombian capital in full collapse after four days of riots and traffic jams caused by a transport strike, which did not stop thousands of people were displaced to Simón Bolívar Metropolitan Park. The rock intimate rendezvous with increasingly pompous and the group took about fifteen minutes, but enlivened the local band hopes Medellin Altered States and Britain and opening act on the tour, "Viva la vida" in Latin America, Bat for Lashes. Coldplay, for the first time in Colombia after thirteen years of musical history, pulled together with a slight rain that was dispelled as the band plays the instrumental "Life in Technicolor." Frontman Chris Martin made a show his usual empathy with the audience with, "Good night parceros (partners)!" who led a series of winks to colloquial speech in Colombia as "Is everything cool back there?" or "Bacano! (good)." interaction with the audience was not there, but, as has become tradition on its tour of at least 25 countries, Martin danced, jumped and even starred in number of leaks to disappear from the main stage to resurface later in the center of a platform with the rest of the band and new instruments.

He highlighted yellow balloons rain when the band played the theme "Yellow" from their debut album "Parachutes", one of the most chanted and held by the public along with "Fix You", the third album called "X & Y", which also included a bunch of fireworks behind the scenes. Later, and are the classic "Singing in the rain", the quartet paraded around the room until you reach another platform closest yet to the public, where he played the song "Shiver". The story of the night came when Martin sat at the piano and an oversight prevented him to complete the solo song "Postcards from far away", so he apologized, tried again and finally went to the next song. With "Viva la vida" Coldplay reached its highest point with the choruses sublime gust hearing , almost in unison raised their cameras and mobile phones to immortalize the moment. Coldplay closed its nearly two hour concert with an encore of "The Scientist" and "Life in Technicolor II", during which he covered much of concert hall Simón Bolívar park with a blanket of paper butterflies. The band, who in recent days he played in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo will travel after its passage through Bogota to Mexico City, Guadalajara and will and Monterrey (Mexico).

ColdPlay rattled to 40 thousand Bogota

The Attendees enjoyed the great successes of Londoners who showed a large-scale spectacle, typical of the best bands in the world. Huge balloons suspended in the air and illuminated with inscriptions of "Viva la Vida 'and references to the album cover were the gadgets that the band use in tarimadel Parque Simón Bolívar. Although the concert started at 8:45 pm, from early morning a group of young people flocked to the gates of the Park Event Square, despite the transport strike that plunged the ciudfad. Speaking to Radio Santa Fe, several of the followers of this London group stated their excitement at the spectacle for which they paid tickets ranging between 120 and 305 thousand dollars or so. "I live nearby and so arrive early, I came walking up here, because a band Coldplay is very important," said one fan of the group. The asitentes are able to enjoy the songs that are already considered classics, like Lost ',' Death and All of His Friends' and almost start when the concert came the song 'Viva la vida' which sparked the euphoria and began to vibrate the floor of the park. The English quartet led by Chris Martin, also played some of their more memorable, chorused by the public as 'The Scientist', 'Fix You', 'Clocks' or 'Yellow'. The best of the show were the many surprises and special effects that enlivened the concert and with the band gained a hearing for a week endured a city without public transportation, but patiently waited until the final hour. The Oracle on 4 March 2010: Parque Simon Bolivar, Bogota, Colombia

March 31, 2010 - submitted by Eliana, Colombia
Q. Q.Hi dear Oracle!
Looking at the photos of Latin America tour, there is one of a wall in Bogota in the oldest part ... my question is: was the hotel at which they lodged in the older part of Bogota? Or they gave a walk along this city?
In respect to the transport strike, thanks to you we could forget what happened out there, as shouting and crying in his songs, it was a magic moment!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please return on your next trip...PLEEASEEEEE!!
The Oracle replies:
The band did not go on that little tour to the oldest part of the city. That particular wall was a fair car ride from the hotel which was in the newer financial centre.

Q. Q, Last Friday I went to a club here in Bogota called "ANDRES CARNE DE RES" and there, someone told me that after the concert you guys went there!! I couldn't believe it!!.. So, my question is: What was your first impression of the place? Did you like it???... Thanks for answering and thanks for coming!! Everyone is waiting for your next concert!!
The Oracle replies:
The first night in Colombia the band did various things for dinner but there were no club visits. The night of the show, as previously reported, Chris & Will went to the bar Mai Lirol Darlin. Andres Carne de Res sounds like a restaurant to me... I know that Franksy (tour manager) went to an excellent meat place the first night so maybe that's the connection.

Q. Dear Oracle, I was wondering, were the members of the band aware of the chaotic situation in Bogota because of the transport strike? They can't imagine all the obstacles most of the fans had to pass to get to the line (at least in my case), I don't know what they saw, but in Bogota we do use public transportation usually :) Pls say that they are going to come back to Colombia soon. Thanks
The Oracle replies:
Chris was told about the strike whilst having his breakfast on the day of the show; he was very worried about how fans would get to the concert.
I myself saw the protests in the square but was assured by Miguel - our very hospitable guide - that the fans had waited such a long time to see Coldplay that they would literally walk miles to get there if they had to. Judging from the crowds it would seem he was correct. It was such a shame that fans had a struggle to get there and hopefully it was well worth the effort!
I can't lie and say the band will be back soon because you know how long it took for that visit!

Q. I knew the night after the concert in Bogota attended a bar called My Little Darling how they felt? Enjoyed the place? Took some Colombian liquor? I charm the concert was an experience never to forget. I am sure I will tell my grandchildren in 40 years that I was on 4 March to the more imposing looking band in my city Bogota, best band, the most dear, the most expected, the most simple and noble, I love them! And come back soon guys at the next opportunity I'm sure we'll be more than 68mil souls Woooahhhohh singing! Thousand blessings, best wishes, good health and prosperity! We hopefully soon back we are waiting for you with open arms! Thanks for coming!!
The Oracle replies:
Thanks for having us! Yes, a few of us (Chris, Will plus Bat For Lashes and some other family & friends) went to that bar after the show in Bogota.
We didn't drink any Comombian liquor actually; there were a few mojitos round the table though.
Will was most amused (and still is) by the fact that the actual name of the bar is Mai Lirol Darlin aka My Little Darling.

Q. Our Oracle!!
I'm very excited the show in Bogota was amazing, I love you so much. The question is: I wanna know if the band eats something of the Colombian kitchen and n if this like the band. pls answer me n sorry for my English.
pd: come back pls
pd2: I don't know where r the puppets in the photo in Colombia.....
thnx
The Oracle replies:
We weren't in Colombia for too long but the first night we arrived in time for dinner. Some people stayed in and had room service and some went out locally; there were no complaints about the lovely food! The catering at the venue was really tasty too.
I have to say the weirdest thing that I tried was in a very small cafe in the centre of the city. A few of us had hot chocolate and it came with cheese on the side. I was the only one who put the cheese into the chocolate, drank it and then used the spoon to eat the cheese! Weird but actually quite nice!
The puppets were photographed in a gazebo at the Parque Simón Bolívar where the concert took place. The backdrop of the mountains with the sun setting was just the perfect photo opportunity.

Q. Dear Oracle:
I want to know if the band had struggles yesterday with the altitude (high) in Bogota? the concert yesterday was amazing...Coldplay is the best band of the world.
Oracle please answer me
The Oracle replies:
The altitude has certainly affected us all especially in Colombia. Will was saying last night how he feels quite short of breath. We've all noticed being light-headed and almost a wobbly on your feet feeling.
We're now in Mexico City so we should start to adjust soon.
EDIT: Erm actually no, the air is still thin!

Q. Hey dear Oracle!!
I was just wondering how the band felt playing here in Bogota. Speaking for myself it was the best night ever, I had never felt such a rush and such excitement! Please answer me, I hope they felt as if they were at home.
Ps: Sorry for my english :)
Thank you!!
The Oracle replies:
The general opinion amongst the touring party is that the crowd in Bogota was the best yet with their manager even saying it was one of the best shows he has ever seen. The atmosphere was amazing with a deafening response to every song; it made the hairs on the back of my arm stand on end (which is a good thing to say by the way).
I can also share with you that a couple of people admitted to feeling very emotional with tears welling up because of the atmosphere you all created. Well done Bogota, you gave Rio a run for its money!

Q. Hey Oracle. I would like to know how is the band feeling right now when they are about to make their best concert ever!!! 04/03/10
The Oracle replies:
Everyone is a little tired after a very long travel day but also excited since arriving in Colombia and seeing the great vibe of the place and its people.
Once again incredibly patient fans were waiting at the hotel and there was one spectacular gift that no doubt Roadie #42 will post photographs of. It really is in an incredible thing!
Anyway, we have yet to see whether the band play the best concert ever but this time tomorrow we will be about to find out!

Q. Hi Dear Oracle!
I am so happy that Coldplay is coming to Colombia!! Lots of crowds will be there. Please let me know if there will be a video recording from Latin America or from the tour...It will the best concert we have this year, and as far as I know people are also coming from Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, and other countries only for Coldplay!!
The Oracle replies:
All I can tell you is that Roadie #42 and myself had a chat on the plane over and we will both certainly be looking through various lenses over the next couple of weeks...
Keep an eye out for his blogs and some updates via Anchorman too.
