Chris martin said he learned 2 things at tonights coldplay concert. 1. Never start a concert with sparklers when it is still daylight 2. Before having a concert in indiana, learn how to address the state as a whole. (Its "hoosiers" not "indiana-ins")

[amandajleech]

wow, I have never been to a coldplay concert before. Only one way to describe it - The ultimate aural orgasm... and I was literally right next to the in-crowd stage where Chris played The hardest part/postcards. Epic beyond belief, I will definitely see them again as soon as humanly possible.

OK here is what happened,so we get there an it's packed, me and my family (Mother Father sister + me), we got lawn seats,so when we finely get in I'm drawn to a certain area,it's directly in front of the stage(Only about three miles back),so i say "I Think We Should Sit Here" but they disagreed and sat a little ways away, but i staid, and so during the howling bells a man who looks like hes with the band he comes up and says "Hello! Are You Alone" And I Said "Well I Have Some Family Over There,Would You Like Me To Move" and he says "No,No Just Wanted To Check", And so the howling bells got over, and he walks up again and shakes my hand and re_introduces himself an the he said "How Would You Like It If I Could Get You Into The Pitt" !!! and my jaw drops,so i go Tell the family and they freak out,and every one around starts to freak, and so he starts to take me over and along the way he says "This Ticket Comes Strait From Chris Martin" !!!And from Thar being seven hundred people be twine me and coldplay, it was seven, and they wear on top of Thar game tonight from start to finish,it was the absolute best night ever,I'll post some pics soon,Peace.

I am at the airport waiting on flight back to Houston. Still haven't been to bed.

It was a crazy crazy day. Got to venue at 1pm. Front row midway between Jonny and Chris. Took a zillion pics and videos, but will have to wait to post most of it because I have to work tonight. Had a speaker right in front of me so sound on videos is kick ass! I got a setlist. Mary got a Snow Patrol setlist. This is such an awesome band combo I wish I was seeing it more than just twice. Jonny threw guitar picks to me and Lori but they went too high and ended up dropping just behind us and someone else got them.

I asked Wayne, the dancing roadie, after the show why he didn't dance during the JayZ and he said because he didn't feel like it that night.

That Verizon promtion thing was a royal pain in the ass. They couldn't even get 100 people with fucking phones. Crazy ass Kelly! First she goes over and rips the Verizon dude a new one because this is such bullshit, then she "rented" a phone from the people setting up the t-shirt stand for $20 and I think at least 8 of us used the same phone to get in the Verizon line. They didn't even notice that the crazy lady without Verizon service, suddenly had Verizon service and so did all her friends. They were asking all these lame triva questions, which Kelly went and complained about.....mmmm Kelly remember we don't actually have Verizon phone, so you might want to stop raising hell , so we started writing the questions ourselves and since no one could answer them, we would then answer them and win the prizes. Then the fucking scanners wouldn't work to read the bar codes on the tickets once the gates were opened. And everyone working at the venue was like dropped on their head as a child or something because none of them knew the head from the ass. Girl at gate: Security people: However Mike asked the security guy at the front if we could video stuff and he said as long as you don't have knives or guns, I don't care what you do. Except no banners.

Well peeps, finally back from a long day and night with coldplay & lots of COLDPLAYERS!!.

The band was great musically, (if in fact I did think Guy was a little tired/chilled out) & Chris seemed to be going that extra mile to make up for it. His voice sounded fab except for 1 tiny crack - which made him give a little giggle , during 42 I think it was.

After a ridiculous amount of pre-entrance drama, starting with the Verizon cell phone early entrance promotion...."suprise, surprise people who've been waiting in front of the venue for 4-7 hours, you can't go in until the people with Verizon phones get in first!!" Whaaaaaaaat????????

.... And then my idiotic brain spasm upon losing my ticket 2 minutes before they open the gates.....(no details, I am too embarrassed)

But finally, with an awesome co-operative posse of dedicated people from these boards, we all got into the pit on that front railing!....it definitely pays to have great people from the boards to hang with before the show. It was like a mini Coldlpaying.com convention (and an awesome preview that Wembley is going to be epic!) Oh yeah! The bonus of hubbie coming with and dancing his ass off the whole show was sweet too, and he got pretty damn excited when Jonny gave him a high five at the end.

The show as everyone knows was without any set list surprises, and I'm sure there are others who will review with some juicier details--Angie, Lori...???, but I had just as much of a blast hanging out with other coldplayers as I did enjoying the show itself. Good Times, Gooooood Times.

OK. So me and two of my friends got to the venue at about 3:30, that’s the same time I arrived at the DC gig and I was one of the first ppl there. SO I thought it would be fine for this show as well! Well STUPID girl at the entrance to the parking lot told us to come back at 5 bc she couldn’t let us park till then! LAME!! So whatever, we killed an hour and a half by walking around that outdoor mall they had in Noblesville and then came back at about 4:45 just to make sure we got in the lot with out too much other traffic. So we made our way up to the gate and at first I didn’t recongnize any other coldplayers so we just took a seat off to the left for a few min. Thankfully this one girl came over and started asking ppl if they had a Verizon phone?! I HAVE A VERIZON PHONE!! YES GIVE ME A BACKSTAGE PASS RIGHT NOW!!! I wish it was just to get in line 5 min. earlier…. So I walked over to get in line and my friends didn’t have a Verizon phone, they weren’t in the pit with me tho, they were in the lawn, so they said it was fine, and they didn’t want to take someones spot in that line who might get a better spot in the pit…so I forget who came up to me first, I think it might have been Lori and was like “Liz?” or something like that?! Haha So then I saw where the other coldplayers were! YAH! So anyway, Mary came over in line and I gave her a hug, YAH! I didn’t recognize her at first bc the only pics of her I had seen was when she had blonde hair from her siggy I think! silly lizzy! Then Kelly and her husband and Angie, and Gianna, and lots of other coldplayers were in line….. we snuck some of them in! heehe! But waiting in line went VERY fast with all the other coldplayers!! Gianna also had her “Reign of Guy” banner that she had taken to previous shows….and so we were going to be standing right next to each other….having a lil Guyfest Also thanks to Angie again for my awesome Jonny guitar pic u gave me and I think maybe u gave Gianna one too! Its AWESOME! I love it! I also agree with what Lori said! Haha I loved hearing Mary’s stories of all the times she had met the boys and the shows she had been too! And the lil story of her catching Guy backstage with those 2 other ppl that one time ( ) AWESOME stories Mary Anyway, as said b4 the ppl working at the Verizon Center were idiots the one girl at the gate didn’t know like anything about letting us in 5 min. b4 the other gates open and most of the time even after 6….she kept talking with her other stupid gate/ security friends And I have already had my lil rant about the “no banners/ signs” shit rule….so we all hid our signs in our bags to get in! Us coldplayers knew to run when we got inside and thank god we all did! Cus once inside we had prime spots in the pit me and Gianna positioned ourselves RIGHT up against the rail, so Guy would only be like 4 ft. away from us the entire show mehehhwhhhhshahah !! Then came the dumbass security chief or whatever he thought he was NO BANNERS OR SIGNS!! He made us put them on the other side of the rail, but whatever we made friends with the security guard in front of us, Lester…..oddly enough I was already in good terms with him since he had just graduated college and had a lot of friends at my college! Hahah We talked with him quite a bit b4 Howling Bells came on… One good thing was that the stage and ramps were SO LOW TO THE GROUND!! at least the ramp had NO railing around it and it only came up to about my waist…and im not that tall…so I knew there was a good chance of touching them if they came out to that ramp.... and the thing is like no one in the pit gathered around the ramp….i think a lot of ppl didn’t think or know that Chris uses the ramps sometimes…so it was a clear shot for me to run over to the ramp and then back up in front of Guy! the only problem was the Jolly Green Giant of a security guard in between me and the ramp…. he was massive… he looked like over 7 ft. tall and shit….i had to get passed him if I wanted to do some touching on the ramps! Hehehe So I remembered the Howling Bells bass player from last time….Joe! so he came out and was looking very fine and clean shaven from last time if I don’t say so myself so I said “Hey Joe!!” and he heard me and said “O Hey! Hows it going?!” got a lil laugh out of him…I think he was surprised I knew who he was again! But I liked him! He smiled at me and Gianna again during their set….and aww I quite like this Joe from Howling Bells! Now Snow Patrol!!! Never seen them live b4….what a treat!! Love Gary, he was awesome and Nathan too! Since he was right in front of me and Gianna the whole time! Loved when Gary turned to our side and I was holding my hands out to him and he looked at me and held his hands out too and kept singing!! AWW! Great moment!! Nathan saw us quite a few times too and smiled…”like hello ladies” haha Now came THE PHIL MOMENT! OK! so i spot Phil talking to one of the other roadies just off to the side of the stage! OMFG!!! so anyway I start waving at Phil and he sees me right away and then he waves back and is just in an awesome mood and laughing and smiling and i blow him a kiss and OMG OMG OMG OM GOOAGFOIEOITFUEWIOUGTIOEWUGIOUEWI ok so what do u call that thing when guys like lean their head back a bit and kind of raise their eyebrows?! if u ever watched Friends.....you know that look that Joey does whenever he asks a girl on the show "How you doin'?" hahaha well thats kind of what Phil did! It was hilarious and COULDN’T BELIEVE THIS WAS HAPPENING!!

and so he did that and laughed again!!! and gave me thumbs up! AHHH I WAS FUCKING DIEING!! and so then i yelled "PHIL!!! YEAH BABBBBBBYYYYYY!!!!" hahaha and then he laughed and i saw i swear....he mouthed back...."yeah baby" and his cheeks were just getting redder and redder and he was laughing and smiley!!! hahahah and then i blew him another Kiss....and he laughed and winked at me all sexay!! OMG!! BEST THING EVER!!!! AHHHHHHH

he then left, like i said, his cheeks red as cherries and was walking away laughing and smiling omg he was just gorgeous! he had his arms crossed some of the time and his arms and chest were delicious and then his eyes were freaking BLUE!!!! like just as blue as Chris's......omg what a hottie! and such a great personality to be in such a great mood like that

and all of this happened in like 3 or 4 min! Im def. lovin’ me some Phil lately! And Angie said she saw a wedding ring…I didn’t see it but maybe in some of Gianna’s pics when she posts them cus she got pics of him smiling and winking at me! If that’s the case then, CONGRATS TO PHIL!!

So Snow Patrol was off and now came my Buddie Roadie Rick! I LOVE THIS GUY!! SO NICE! He is the Roadie who holds the curtain down on Guy’s side b4 they lift it up for Violet Hill! So we ended up talking to him for a long time! He was SO surprised that we knew who everyone was…hahah he couldn’t understand how we knew who Franksie, Hoppy, Matt, and Jackie and Phil were! “what?! You know who Phil is?! You guys already know everyone!” hahaa “how do u know this?!” “we are HUGE fans Rick….we know lots of things…haha See don’t u think I should be one of Coldplay’s Roadies?! I already know who everyone is and I def. have the enthusiasm to get the job done !” He said, “You sure do! “ then he told me about how he got started as their roadie and told me how! meememehahheheh And he saw our signs and we told him about the dumbass security guards and he couldn’t believe it! Said it was SO dumb and he said that if they wouldn’t let us hold them up for Guy at the beginning then he would hold them up for us! I showed him my Guy Berryman tee shirt too and the back of it and he laughed….hahaha “Big Guy Berryman fan then…he is going to like that…he will be right there, of course he will see it! “ SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE Then somehow we got off on talking about the Viva jet… and I asked him if he rides in it with them….he said “No I wish! We have to take the bus….” Haha aww… Then another Roadie handed him the setlist from onstage and Me and Gianna asked If we could have that after the show!?!?!? he said, yeah…AWWW SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! I remember asking him about Chris too! And the whole sparkler thing and he started to laugh and told me all about that…he said the ones they were using that night weren’t really sparklers they were something else more flammable…. I forget the word he used, and that Chris slipped cus it was wet and landed on it… !! He said he was completely fine now! And that they use REAL sparklers this time…. And I even asked him if Guy was still running, or if he was still hurt from that one incident with the new running shoes since he wasn’t able to run the London marathon…He said Guy was completely fine now…so yah! So now it was SUPER close to show time! We knew what was coming….hell yes!! Guy was the first to run out with the sparklers this time as b4 at my DC show! AMAZING!!! we held our signs out In front of us during Violet Hill and he saw them and at the end he smiled and tilted his guitar toward us! He looked at us about 5 tmes during the show and smiled so at least we were making him happy But like I said b4….he wasn’t nearly as happy or smiley or loving the attention as much as at the DC show! I think he was stressed or something just because of the way he was moping about when Chris was singing the Hardest Part and he was back sitting by Will’s drums with his head in his hands and looking bummed and then b4 Politik when the stage was still dark I saw Chris come over to him and give him a hug and Guy was still looking down at the ground, looking sad and Chris talked to him for a moment. Then Chris said something to him and whispered something in his ear, and they both got the BEST SMILE ON THEIR FACES! and Chris laughed and then Guy patted Chris on the back and he laughed too! It was just the best Chris & Guy moment ever! I loved seeing Chris beign such a good friend to Guy and cheering him up like that! Something must of happened for Guy to be all sad and depressed like that….and for Chris to make such a guesture and come over and hug him and cheer him up on stage! After that Chris started to walk away but came right back and put his arm around Guy again and pointed someone out to him in the audience….and Guy got a really big smile on his face then too! So I think Chris was serious about the whole girlfriend thing, since Guy did seem distracted during some parts too and kept looking up to his left in the crowd like he was trying to find someone! So I hope she makes him happy if that’s who Chris was pointing out to him in the crowd! ! Anyway, going back a bit….Chris didn’t know what to call ppl from Indiana…haha what did he call us? Indianians?! Hahah or something like that! And then during the Hardest Part…he apologized and said he loved Indiana, but “what the fuck do you call yourselfs?!” hahaah love Chris! So funny! And Chris had us sing the last note to Yellow for Will’s wife, Marianne since It was her birthday today! In My Place was REALLY amazing!! I knew that once Chris started heading over to the ramp…I HAD to get over there!! So here Chris is!! AHHHHH!!!! He was only a foot away and everyone was flippin out!! I couldn’t help it, his leg was on the edge and I just reached out and grabbed / touched his calf!!! he felt it and looked down at me and I just looked up at him like legit….my face was this: --> and he saw me and smiled down at me and kept singing and awwww when he looked down some sweat from his face dripped on my arm! ( I wiped my arm on my Guy berryman t shirt….so Chris’s sweat is now on that! )……!!! OI!!!! MOST AMAZING THING EVER!!! That is some legit wickedness touching Chris Martin!!! But god….leave it to the Jolly Green Giant security guard and the bitch lady to the side to get me out of there! the guard kind of held his arm out in front of me then and the lady seriously had something up her ass cus she pushed me back and said “YOU GET OUT OF HERE!!!” bitch. Please. Jealous much?! na na na boo boo!! I still touched Chris and u didn’t! hahah I also touched the feathers or fabric or whatever that is hanging off of the dragon head when he came down the ramp with that crazy ass thing that thing is awesome!! Hahah Chris was just so energetic and def. giving it 100% that night! Prolly the best I have seen him from my 3 shows! He was giving us some wonky/ crazy eyes I think at the end of 42 like crossing his eyes and what not for the longest time HAHHA and then he started to laugh when it was over! All the songs were perfect! god I don’t care if they play the same songs on this tour….all their songs mean SO much to me…. and just seeing them live is enough for me! Only bad parts of the show for me was that one drunk asshole dude and his wife behind me who were ripping on Guy the entire night and asking me 2304958734 times what Chris’s name was again, …. with all his “His dude looks like he cant wait to get the fuck out of here! He looks like an asshole”(about Guy) and then I HAD to say something….he was just asking for it! So I put that dumbass in his place…”Don’t you think if your going to be taking up room in the pit, your should at least know the singers first name?! And that “asshole guitarist” your talking about is the shyest member of the band, I admit this isn’t his best night, but cut him some slack!” and then I didn’t hear any more out of him! The only other bad thing was like I said, the no signs rule and when we tried to hold it out for Guy again b4 Strawberry Swing, that asshole security guard came over and said “Put the signs away now! If I see them again, im taking them and your never getting them back” dear god….much of a douche?!

But those were the only bad things…..overall the night was a DREAM!!!

Will was amazing, I didn’t see him and Jonny as much as Chris or Guy, but I love them all! Will was still drumming like muthafuggin beast lol and giving it his all! Jonny of course always got that smile on his face and my friend said Jonny was her new fav. Cus he always looked so happy throughout the show…and its true! He always is! My appreciation of all them has increased SO much seeing them this close in the last 2 weeks and just seeing how talented the really are and how great they are to the crowd and their fans! I couldn’t help but get sad during Death and All of His Friends…. I always do, cus the show is almost over! But Guy smiled again really big at me at the end and laughed so I was glad it all ended on a fabulous note! And they came back out for the encore and the Scientist was AMAZING, haha and then Guy came out with a beer in hand and taking some gulps b4 he picked his bass back up for LiTii! So after the show, I see Roadie Rick again and he is talking to some other Roadies and then he comes over to where we are and says “1 min!” and then he takes Guy’s setlist off of the floor and hands it to me and he gave Gianna the one that he had in his pocket. And then he goes back and grabs Guy’s guitar pic off of the microphone stand, cus Guy stuck it in a lil groove on there after LiTii and he holds it out for me! And now this stupid girl who had been calling Guy “guitar dude” and yelling for him to throw her his pic the entire show( I finally had to tell her his name was “guy” bc it was annoying me….), tried to grab it b4 I got to it! HELL NO!! Rick says, “NO! This is for her!” and puts it right into my hand! SQUWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!! LOVE U AND THANK U ROADIE RICK!!! I thanked him so much and told him how great it was to meet and talk with him….he said your welcome and take care. Hope u had fun!! AHHHH! He was the nicest roadie ever!!! We gathered some butterflies and took a few pics of the gang at the end…(all of which I look disgusting in those pics….. uhhh gross, I was hot and tired…) I had to meet back up wth my friends. And Im so glad they were right up next to them when they sang out in the Lawn cus I called them and told them where to go when I saw the setup! They had the time of their lives too!! It was amazing! Only bad thing in the parking lot was I guess my one friend was in the car and my other friend came over to get me since I couldn’t see them and while my one friend was in the car, some drunk dumbass came and pulled down his pants and stuck his nasty ass on her window for a few sec. EWW! Her face was priceless when we got back to the car and she told us about it! Omg! Weird! :lol but the ride home was fun and we listened to LRLRL….sadly my friends didn’t get a copy for some reason but I did, even tho I came out after them?! they said they were all out from the exit they took and they didn’t know to go to another gate and see. So I gave them my extra copy since I already have one from my DC gig! Anyway best night ever!! I don’t know which show was better for me my DC or Indy show…they both had things better and some things worse! either way im so happy I have seen them and been so lucky these last few shows….

Media Reviews

The rock ’n’ roll crown rests easily on the collective head of Coldplay, a band that balanced earnestness against whimsy and virtuosity against the basics Friday night at Verizon Wireless Music Center. Vocalist Chris Martin -- the focal point of attention since the U.K. band released debut album “Parachutes” in 2000 -- makes everything land in its right place in a live setting.

At the top of the show, Coldplay and its audience of 20,207 fumbled for common ground across two songs. But once Martin uncorked pub-rock triumph “In My Place,” a massive sing-along latched onto its tipsy tempo. Criticized at times for being too solemn and other times for being too goofy, Martin appeared comfortable in his own skin during this picture-perfect Indiana night. His lyrics turn outward and consider big questions on current album “Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends.” The what-does-it-all-mean duo “Cemeteries of London” and “42” were paired effectively and enhanced by the singer’s full-throated delivery.

Martin’s ideas are catching up to Coldplay’s position of grandeur, and the art is fortunately less grandiose. The biggest reward of a Coldplay show is the integration of all of the band’s albums. When Martin gushes the lyrics of “Yellow,” the audience hears the romantic upstarts of “Parachutes.”

A slamming rendition of “Politik” brings back the days when the band felt its rock-star oats on “A Rush of Blood to the Head.”

A soul-stirring rendition of “Fix You” proves that “X&Y” strived for importance and succeeded at least once. It even could be argued that “Fix You” puts the band on equal footing with towering influences U2 and Radiohead. One thing Coldplay doesn’t do is muscle up its sound by using recorded tracks or hiring sidemen who lurk at the back of the stage. Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, bass player Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion go it alone, and they’re sometimes stretched thin (especially when listeners hope for a $100 show to match their $100 ticket).

There’s no question Champion carries his weight. He strikes with ferocity, and he revealed the sweetest voice in the band when singing “Death Will Never Conquer” on one of two satellite stages that placed the musicians closer to their fans. Coldplay’s roster might be counted as four plus the thousands of loyalists who come together for the heavy thoughts of “42” as well as summer-fun covers such as “I’m a Believer.”

I haven’t been so happy at a concert (especially one at Verizon) in years. First the night kicked off with Snow Patrol who played a killer set (featuring all my favorite songs) on their first night touring with Coldplay. Maybe it was the perfect Indiana night, or the mix of Coldplay’s megahits and ballads, but I loved this show. I was reading an interview that Chris Martin gave after the Indy show where he said he learned two things: 1. Don’t start your show with sparklers when it’s still daylight, and 2. learn the nickname of the concert goers before you talk to them (we’re Hoosiers, not Indianans - thanks for figuring it out midway through the show).

From the yellow balls, to confetti butterflies, to acoustic versions of songs in the lawn, and a free live Coldplay album as you exited, this was the ultimate show for a Coldplay fan. They played most of my favorites - I was especially hoping to hear Yellow, The Scientist, Green Eyes and Fix You - and all four were beyond my expectations. I think the only song I wanted to hear and didn’t was Trouble.

While the tickets to this show were a gift, I am still experiencing a little sticker shock at the nearly $100 price tag for my upper pavilion (Section D, Rown N) seats. I was standing on my tip toes for most of the show to be able to see Chris Martin sing. Thankfully, he flies around the stage dancing and jumping all over - giving all fans an opportunity to catch a glimpse of him. (I thought the video screen was really hard to look at because the cuts from band member to band member were so tight it was almost dizzying). While I am still glad to have had a seat in the pavilion, $100 is awfully steep (and that’s before service fees, parking and other random charges). At that price, I’m thinking seeing Coldplay might be a one-time thing for me. It’s totally worth it once, but I’m not sure I need to see them again (unless there’s a new album). For now, I’m completely satisfied by this concert experience. Thank you Chris Martin and Coldplay!

Coldplay's June 5 show was consistent with shows on their last tour, which also stopped at Verizon Wireless Music Center.

Just like in 2005, the platinum-selling British group used tricks to win the crowd, dropping big yellow balloons filled with confetti during the rendition of their first hit, "Yellow." This time around they used not just one, but two auxiliary stages - one in the upper pavilion and the other on the lawn - to give the sold-out amphitheater a sense of intimacy.

Several tracks from their most acclaimed and best-selling release to date, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, graced the set list, notably "Violet Hill," "Lost" and the title cut. The quartet wore the garb - relics from Sgt. Pepper's closet - that has become synonymous with the album.

Coldplay also used globes that descended from the ceiling and projected everything from psychedelic imagery to live band shots, with quick cuts and '80s band a-ha-style stop-action animation. The video element brings Coldplay closer than ever to Pink Floyd's visual superiority.

Frontman Chris Martin executed his customary half-skip around the stage and two catwalks. He rarely sat still at his piano, either, unless the band was playing one of its more meditative numbers. Martin struck the right balance between engaging the audience and not getting on its nerves, however. During one impromptu jam on the lawn stage, he riffed, "Singing in some places is good, in others great. Especially when you're playing the Hoosier state." At another point he orchestrated a cell phone wave.

Coldplay have also shown their aptitude for bringing along great and/or complementary special guests. In 2005 it was the Technicolor fuzz of Black Mountain. This time it was the lovelorn pop-rock of Snow Patrol, who headlined their own concert two summers ago at The Lawn.

Unlike Coldplay, Snow Patrol only performed two songs off their new album, A Hundred Million Suns: the pixie-dust propulsion of "If There's a Rocket Tie Me To It" and the fist-pumping thump of "Crack the Shutters." Otherwise the Irish group's older recordings were better represented, and still enough to get many out of their seats. Opening act Howling Bells commenced the proceedings with a darkly danceable and hypnotic brand of rock. Think a Cure vibe without the mope.

Noblesville, Ind. - When an enormous yellow beach ball bounced out of the audience and hit bassist Guy Berryman in the head in front of more than 20,000 fans in attendance according to the “Indianapolis Star,” he couldn’t help but turn to his fellow Coldplay band mates and laugh. Lead singer songwriter, Chris Martin, with a wide smile, launched the ball back into the crowd, but only after he’d boyishly kicked it around the stage to his satisfaction and the crowd’s amusement.

The prop was released with 20 more or so of the same as a tangible way to get the audience involved during the foursome’s performance of their single, “Yellow.” But it was the candidness seen in the reaction of the multi award-winning band onstage to a silly circumstance that kept the audience captivated for two full hours of music. Even the edges of seats in the Verizon Wireless Music Center weren’t sufficient means to prepare for whatever would happen next. Collectively, the crowd stood the entire time.

The beginning of the show on June 4, 2009, gave the band a bit of trouble when technical effects were masked in sunlight, which still shined brightly as they graced the stage at 9 P.M. Front man Martin later laughed off the awkward start to the show in a transitional spiel when he disclosed the two things he’d learned that evening; that “lasers don’t work in broad daylight” and to “know what to call your audience,” after being received with unified giggles when he addressed its members as “Indianans.”

But at the first guitar twang of “In My Place,” the crowd erupted in cheers and whistles from the seats to the lawn. At the peak of the song, Martin pointed his microphone towards the audience and, as if casting a spell, magically transformed the venue into an impromptu chorus upon his invitation to sing as loudly as possible. The sun had set by the end of the song, and the ear-to-ear grins of the members of Coldplay reflected the comfort they felt after finally finding solid ground and a sound that struck a chord with their fans. Longtime Coldplay follower, Corey Alston, was on the verge of tears when Martin dedicated his favorite song, “Fix You” to “everyone on the lawn”-a population that included Alston himself.

“I seriously thought I might cry,” Alston said. “I was looking forward to that concert more than any other concert I’ve ever been to. It meant so much to feel like Chris (Martin) actually knew I was there.”

Coldplay had already taken steps to show appreciation for its fans and their support before its U.S. summer tour began. On May 15 of this year, the band made its live album, “LeftRightLeftRightLeft” available as a free download from its official website, and announced that the same album would be passed out at every Coldplay show scheduled on the tour. According to the band’s website, “the give-away is meant as a recession-busting mark of gratitude to everyone who’s supported (Coldplay).”

“Playing live is what we love,” the band said, in a statement on their website regarding the free release. “This album is a thank you to our fans - the people who give us a reason to do it and make it happen.”

It seemed an extension of Coldplay’s gratitude when the band walked off the main stage, meandered through the aisles of the lower level seats, and made its way to a second, smaller stage set up in the midst of the fans themselves. Even those on the lawn began running down the enormous length of stairs, past security guards at the greater odds of getting away with seeing the band up close. Lawn ticketholder Kristen McKeon jumped over a barred section of seating when it became obvious the band was meeting its further-away fans halfway, and swears she was no more than 15 feet from Martin as he played and sang, “The Hardest Part.”

“I can’t believe I did that,” McKeon said. “I can’t believe the band did that. It’s amazing and awesome and obvious that (Coldplay) went out of their way to give everyone that showed up their money’s worth. I will never forget this.”

Neither will general admission ticketholders, who hardly predicted getting a $100 glimpse of Coldplay-the price of choice seating in the lower level. The band returned to the main stage and played through songs from their most recent LP, “Viva la Vida,” before they abandoned the stage once more to weave through the audience. The spotlight that followed their path disappeared for a few seconds, only to reveal their new place on the lawn. An avalanche of people rushed from the furthest corners of the venue to the base of the hill where the British quartet relocated and asserted both literal and metaphorical common ground when their cover of the Monkees,’ “I’m a Believer” broke into a massive sing-along.

Coldplay returned to the stage one last time, and the music ended with the bang of confetti canons during the song, “Lovers in Japan” and a long-winded “thank you” from Martin on behalf of the band. The venue lights came on and unveiled thousands of people scrambling for their free albums and pieces of confetti. The ending lyrics of the final song on “Viva la Vida” played over the loudspeakers-”in the end, we lie awake and dream of making our escape.” But as fans raved and reminisced on the eventful evening and scavenged for something to remember the night by, it was apparent that the act of leaving was no such “escape.”
