First introduction
M.M.I.X. was first referenced in the official tracklisting announcement on 9th September 2011. [1]The song itself was the technically the first released for the MX era, appearing as the background music to the "ITTMUIGMROFUTRSARSDWTSAGDIRBACTAFS" teaser prior to the release of Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall.[2]
Meaning
MMIX is Roman Numerals for 2009, but it was confirmed on 15th September 2011 that this is not the origin for the song title (see below). In an online interview with Music Week the explanation for the song title was as follows: "It doesn’t stand for 2009. It came from (long-serving guitar tech) 'Mat McGinn is awesome' so I don’t know why the fuck it got called that. It has nothing to do with anything… it stands for nothing; it’s just a collection of letters."
Reviews
In the article by Q Magazine published on 10th October 2011 entitled "First Impressions of... Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto"[3] they wrote: "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall is deigned to be a sufficient enough centre-piece of the album that it warrants its own intro - so, M.M.I.X, a sort of sister to the opening track, is a minute-long electronica drone. It's almost as if Brian Eno had something to do with this record or something."
The Oracle on M.M.I.X.

Q. At the opening of Paradise and Charlie Brown videos we can see underneath the song title the numbers MMXI and MMXII respectively, this would have anything to do with the song titled MMIX that serves as a opening for Every Teardrop is a Waterfall?
The Oracle replies:
The Paradise video was made in 2011 and the Charlie Brown video was made in 2012. In Roman Numerals those years are represented as MMXI and MMXII respectively. Neither have anything to do with MMIX on MX - which does not mean 1010 by the way.

Q. Hello everybody, I heard a rumour which says Will Champion is gonna sing on MMIX. Is it true?
Thanks for everything you do.
The Oracle replies:
As I just mentioned on the previous post, there's a mere two weeks to go before we get our hands (and ears) all over Mylo Xyloto & rumours are everywhere. Most are made up and not based on any truth. I don't want to go through and confirm or deny them all but I'll put this one to bed; Will doesn't sing on MMIX.

Q. Hello Oracle!
Here's a question about: M.M.I.X. "MMIX is Roman Numerals for 2009." - Wikicoldplay.com. Does it have anything to do with 2009? Also, whats your favorite song on the album? Thanks!
The Oracle replies:
It doesn't stand for the year 2009 so ignore that entry. I can see why people assume that of course. As you may have noticed, there were press interviews last week so soon enough details about the album will filter through the media but I do know that when that question was asked, the answer given had nothing to do with Roman Numerals but in fact a crew member. I won't spoil the journalist's fun by repeating the answer. If it doesn't make the final printed interview, I shall let you know! I haven't heard the whole album yet but PoC is certainly a front runner at the moment. I am loving everything I have heard by the way.
