First reference

Offical symbol for Major Minus
Major Minus may have been indirectly referenced during an interview with Q Magazine in November 2010[1]. They were still considering what the title will be, but Chris Martin gave away a hint to the album name saying, "I don't want to say about the title. It will probably begin with an 'M'. Two words."

Chris said the lyrics on the band's next album are inspired by New York graffiti and the White Rose Movement - a group of German children in World War II who printed anti-Nazi flyers - and he admires people who speak out and express themselves in negative environments - admitting he's not always done that himself. "I admire it. I've spent a lot of my life playing it a bit safe or conforming to something, even though I didn't agree with it. So I have respect and admiration for people who don't. The ideas come from graffiti art of the 70s in New York, where people were expressing themselves with paint. Then there was the White Rose Movement. Anybody who's standing up for themselves. It's about being free to be yourself and to express yourself among negative surroundings. Being able to speak out or follow your passion, even if everybody seems against it."

Reviews

In the article by Q Magazine published on 10th October 2011 entitled "First Impressions of... Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto"[2] they wrote: "Beginning with the jagged strum of a detuned acoustic guitar, Major Minus sounds like the bitter flipside of God Put A Smile On Your Face. Chris Martin's vocals sounding like they were recorded in a seedy phonebox, the "they got one eye on the road/And one on you" chorus delivered amidst guitar shards and a kinetic percussive groove. One of the most immediate songs on the album, and the most darkly playful thing they've done since Daylight."

First performance

Coldplay first performed Major Minus at a friends and family gig at The Forum, Kentish Town, London on 31st May 2011. They then continued to play it at the summer festival dates of 2011, beginning at Rock im Park Festival, Nürnberg, Germany (3rd June 2011), and again at Rock am Ring the following day[3].

Trending of Major Minus

During Coldplay's headlining performance on the Pyramid Stage at the Glastonbury festival on 25th June 2011, Major Minus trended on Twitter worldwide after the song had been played.

Lyrics

They got one eye watching you
One eye on what you do
So be careful who it is you're talking to
They got one eye watching you
One eye on what you do
So be careful what it is you're trying to do
And be careful if you're walking into view
Just be careful if you're walking into view

Ooh ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh oooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you
Ooh ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh oooh
Got one eye on the road and one on

They got one eye watching you
One eye on what you do
So be careful cause nothing they say is true
No d, -don't believe a word
Its jus-ust-us against the world
And we just got to turn up to be heard
Hear the crocodiles ticking round the world
Hear the crocodiles ticking, they go ticking round the world

Ooh ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh oooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you
Ooh ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh oooh
Got one eye on the road and
You could hear them climbing the stairs
Got my right side fighting while my left hides under the chairs

Ooh ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh oooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you
Ooh ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh oooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you
