Politik is the first song on A Rush of Blood to the Head. The song was written on September 13, 2001. Chris Martin wrote it after the attacks of the World Trade Center in New York City. He confirmed that it was written about the state of the world. The song's rhythm is very banging-like, with silent verses. Politik is frequently played live during almost all their tours since the release, usually as an opener.

The Oracle on Politik

November 22, 2012 - submitted by Francisco, Brazil
Q. I was wondering why the song Politik was named in German? Is there a special reason? Why it's not Politic?
Cheers, Francisco
The Oracle replies:
A while back, Chris gave an interview about it: "Phil said said to me ‘Oh, you should have a song called Politic.' And I said ‘Oh, all right'. It's as simple as that. Because if he says something you do it, unless it's something naff, but we liked it because it sounds Eastern... Russian. But it is meant to be with a K. We like it as a song title."

Q. What's the chances of Politik being added to the playlist for tonight. Bring it on Coventry!!!!!
The Oracle replies:
Not a chance at all Nate - if I may call you that.
Will replied to the question in the recent twitter chat of why it's been dropped from the set and his response was, "To use a football analogy, it's played 10 seasons in a row and it needs a rest".

Q. Dear Oracle,
Can you tell me why Politik was never released as a single? Chris often says he thinks it's one of their best songs - and it certainly is better than the single In My Place (which, of course, especially live, also is enjoyable).
Best regards
Simon
The Oracle replies:
That is quite an interesting point you make and will be difficult to explain but I shall do my best. I think it's almost always obvious which songs (by any artist) are singles, which are album tracks and which are b sides - though in the case of Prince, Oasis and Coldplay for instance, their b sides are often as good if not better than singles, such is the high standard.
It's not like songs are written with anything but the finished album in mind at the start, but once it takes shape, you can tell which are openers and closers even if selecting the running order proves tricky.
I guess singles have a feel about them too; a commercial radio friendly appeal. Politik (genius as it is), wasn't a quintessential airplay song.

Q. Dear Oracle this is true or false Politik was written days after the attacks of 11 September 2001?
Thanks Lovely Oracle
The Oracle replies:
Actually yes, Politik was written in the wake of that tragedy and very much inspired by those events.

Q. Hey oracle! I was watching Politik on youtube from the Live 2003 DVD and I was skimming through the comments when I read that some users were saying Matt Bellamy from Muse wrote the piano part, is this true?! if it is I'd be so disappointed, I know Chris is capable of writing beautiful things, is this one of them?
The Oracle replies:
No, that's not true. Muse inspired Clocks but have never been involved in any writing with or for Coldplay.

Lyrics

Look at earth from outer space
Everyone must find the place
Give me time and give me space
Give me real, don't give me fake

Give me strength, reserve control
Give me heart and give me soul
Give me time give us a kiss
Tell me your own Politik

Open up your eyes
Open up your eyes
Open up your eyes
Open up your eyes

Give me one, cause one is best
And in confusion, confidence
Give me peace of mind and trust
And don't forget the rest of us

Give me strength, reserve control
Give me heart and give me soul
Wounds that heal and cracks that fix
Oh Love, tell me your own politik

Open up your eyes
Open up your eyes
Open up your eyes
Just open up your eyes

And give me love over, love over, love over this
And give me love over, love over, love over this
