Prospekt's March/Poppyfields

Prospekt's March/Poppyfields is a track written during sessions for Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends. The song didn't make the final cut and eventually saw release as the title track on the Prospekt's March EP.

The track contains two different songs, like many double tracks on VLV do (e.g. Lovers In Japan/Reign Of Love). However, unlike other Coldplay double tracks, Prospekt's March and Poppyfields are faded together to form a seamless, single-song medley and is generally considered to be one unit. Prospekt's March is the main song while Poppyfields is a short, ambient instrumental piece.

The two songs came to be fused together into one a long time before Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends was finalized; the two songs are listed together on almost everything, including the big painting in the album's booklet and also the alternate VLV tracklisting in the VLV tour programme.

Lyrics

Smoke is rising from the houses
People burying their dead
I ask somebody what the time is
But time doesn't matter to them yet
People talking without speaking
Trying to take what they can get
I ask you if you remember
Prospekt, how could I forget?

Drums
Here it comes
Don't you wish that life could be as simple
As fish swimming round in a barrel?
When you've got the gun
Oh and I run
Here it comes
We're just two little figures in a soup bowl
Trying to get behind a kind of control
But I wasn't one
Now here I lie
On my own in a separate sky
And here I lie
On my own in a separate sky
I don't wanna die
On my own here tonight
But here I lie
On my own in a separate sky...
