LP4 Tracklisting

Rainy Day is a song written during sessions for Coldplay's fourth album, but was not included in the final tracklist. It was eventually released on the Prospekt's March EP.

On the handwritten list of VLV songs in the tripleM interview, the song is listed as "Rainy Day/School". Will Champion confirmed later in a radio interview that School used to be an intro to Rainy Day, before being re-used for Death And All His Friends instead.

The lyrics are very difficult to make out.

The Oracle on Rainy Day

March 10, 2011 - submitted by Thibault, France
Q. Dear Oracle,
I'm wondering something. The man who put strings on Viva, is he the same guy that put them on Rainy Day?
The Oracle replies:
Indeed it is the same guy and that guy is Davide Rossi.

Q. Hi Oracle, I travelled to Denver, Colorado from Bath, UK to see Coldplay on the 21st November 2008 with my Dad as he was the pilot and was the best thing ever!! The show was incredible enough for me to go and see them in Manchester as well. I will also be seeing them at Wembley.
Anyway, is it true that a Caroline Dale played the cello on the song Rainy Day. I know that on the album it says all string arrangements by Davide Rossi, its just that I happen to know Caroline and she mentioned to me that she played on it?
Thank you
The Oracle replies:
Wow that's a cool way to go to a show!
Caroline did play cello on an early version of the track but as Prospekt's March E.P sleeve notes state, "all strings Davide Rossi", that includes cello.

Q. Who is Emily Bart-Smith?
The Oracle replies:
I presume you ask as she is credited with additional vocals on Rainy Day...
Emily is a close friend of the band and has been for many years. She was also a member of The High Wire but wasn't part of the line-up that supported Coldplay on the last U.K leg of the tour.

Q. What about the songs named Glass Of Water, Rainy Day, Poppy Fields, Leftrightleftrightleft, A Spell A Rebel Yell a.o.? Are those names previous names of Coldplay songs on Viva la Vida, or are they new songs? And if so, when do they come out and where can we find them?
The Oracle replies:
They were all songs recorded during the process of making the 4th album. Some were serious contenders for inclusion. As with previous albums the selection process was long and intense. Trying to get the right balance meant that these songs had to be left off. Sometimes they appear as b-sides so we may still hear them. At the moment they can’t be heard anywhere I could direct you to.

Lyrics

Then there was rain
The sky wore a veil of gold and green
Night is the bride of a lonely day
Time just floated

Then there was rain
The sound foundations are crumbling
To the ground comes a pyramid tumbling
Time just floated away
We can watch it and stay and we can listen

Oh rainy day come round
Sometimes I just want it to slow down
And we're separated now
And, oh
But I love it when you come over to the house
I love it when you come over to my house

Then there was rain
I spent the night with the queen of Spain
My lonely little heart well it broke again
Time so vicious

Singing, the deeper that the knife goes in
The more you win
You end up with less than where you begin
The deeper that the knife goes in
Ohhhhhhh

Oh rainy day come round
Sometimes I just want it to slow down
We're separated now
And, oh
But I love it when you come over to the house
I love it when you come over to my house

Aaahhhhhh
Aaahhhhhh
Aaahhhhhh

And I love it when you come over to the house
I love it when you come over to my house
And I love it when you come over to the house
I love it when you come over to my house
