The Oracle on Spies

December 12, 2012 - submitted by Tiffany, United States of America
Q. HI Oracle
Is there any special meaning behind Spies? I love that song and I was just curious.
The Oracle replies:
There isn't a special meaning per se but there was a reason and inspiration behind its conception.
The band very much had John Barry (composer of the best theme songs in film & tv ever!) in mind and there was a Bond film in the pipeline.
They wrote the song in 1999 and for a while considered self- releasing it as a white label promo.

Q. Hello wise Oracle. I only have one question for you, why is the song in the music video for Spies different than the one featured in Parachutes? I know that they had made the video originally for Spies, but the video's version started faster and had a faster beat. I was wondering if this might have been because they had originally made this video for Spies, but then changed it to Bigger Stronger. I hope to hear from you,
Ana
The Oracle replies:
You must be referring to such videos as this where someone has taken the video from our timeline and dubbed Spies over the top.
For those that don't know, if you click on the TV icon between August & September 1999 you will see a video for Bigger Stronger. That video was actually made for Spies but the band changed their minds and chose to release Bigger Stronger. It was too late to shoot a new one so the original video remained.
The version of Spies dubbed over the video is an early version of the song and that's why it's different.
The eagle-eyed among you may have noticed we've added some new stuff to the timeline too...

Q. Hi Oracle! I would want to know which Coldplay song is the most controversial? And why?
The Oracle replies:
I guess I'd have to say Spies purely for the reason that the song was banned in China due to political sensitivity! That is totally true.

Q. The song Spies refers to paparazzi?
The Oracle replies:
At the time of writing the song, they band had no first hand experience of being papped so no, it wasn't. It was actually more of an attempt at a Bond song. In 1999 Bond film The World Is Not Enough was in production and the band wrote Spies inspired by their love of John Barry, renowned writer of Bond themes/songs.

Lyrics

I awake to find no peace of mind
I said how do you live
As a fugitive?
Down here, where I cannot see so clear
I said what do I know?
Show me the right way to go

And the spies came out of the water
But you're feeling so bad 'cos you know
And the spies hide out in every corner
But you can't touch them no
'Cos they're all spies

They're all spies
They're all spies

I awake to see that no one is free
We're all fugitives - look at the way we live
Down here, I cannot sleep from fear, no
I said which way do I turn?
Oh I forget everything I learn

And the spies came out of the water
But you're feeling so bad 'cos you know
And the spies hide out in every corner
But you can't touch them no
'Cos they're all spies

They're all spies

And if we don't hide here
They're gonna find us
And if we don't hide now
They're gonna catch us when we sleep
And if we don't hide here
They're gonna find us

And the spies came out of the water
But you're feeling so good 'cos you know
That those spies hide out in every corner
And they can't touch you, no
'Cos they're just spies

They're just spies
They're just spies
They're just spies
They're just spies.
