Square One is the first track on Coldplay's 2005 album X&Y. The song draws heavily on the albums overall space theme, going as far to include a few bars from "Also sprach Zarathustra" (known for its use in 2001: A Space Odyssey). The song was used to open their live shows during the Twisted Logic Tour. A live version of this song, recorded at the Gelredome in the Netherlands, was released on the second Dutch Talk CD.

The Oracle on Square One

December 3, 2012 - submitted by Jaroslav , Lithuania
Q. Dear Oracle
I wanted to question you why the band dosen't play Square One in the MX tour ?
The Oracle replies:
Square One was very much an opener; that is to say that its place was perfect on the Twisted Logic tour as the first song of the set.
It doesn't really fit anywhere else so hasn't been played since.
Politik was an obvious opener too but that somehow works where they have placed it over the years.

Q. Dear Oracle,
am I the only one who absolutely looooves Square One?! I think its a beautiful tune with a powerful message, but not many people take it into their consideration while discussing Coldplay's best songs. What do you think about Square One?
The Oracle replies:
Just as Politik did on the previous album, Square one did on X&Y; they both gave their albums the most epic beginning! I absolutely LOVE Square One and when I got taken for a spin in a new car that was the song I put on the stereo to test its speakers. Awesome!
I remember hearing it for the first time and love everything from the intro to the middle eight to the crescendo and the ending with a softer climax. Spine tingling stuff.

Lyrics

You're in control is there anywhere you wanna go?
You're in control is there anything you wanna know?
The future's for discovering
The space in which we're traveling

From the top of the first page
To the end of the last page
From the start in your own way
You just want...
Somebody listening to what you say
It doesn't matter who you are.

Under the surface trying to break through
Deciphering the codes in you
I need a compass,draw me a map
I'm on the top I can't get back
Whoah. Woah.

First line of the first page
To the end of the last page
You were looking
From the start in your own way
You just want...
Somebody listening to what you say
It doesn't matter who you are
It doesn't matter who you are

Oooh.

You just want somebody listening to what you say
You just want somebody listening to what you say
It doesn't matter who you are
It doesn't matter who you are

Is there anybody out there who is lost and hurt and lonely too?
But they're bleeding all your colours into one,
And if you come undone as if you'd been run through,
Some catapult it fired you.
You wonder if your chance will ever come.
Well, if you're stuck in square one.
