First introduction

U.F.O. was first referenced in the official tracklisting announcement on 9th September 2011. [1]

Connections To Other Songs

Mylo Xyloto (song) and A Hopeful Transmission are based on the chords from the second half of U.F.O.

After the song ends, the track includes a short instrumental section (reminiscent of Poppy Fields) that segues into the following track (Princess of China).

Reviews

In the article by Q Magazine published on 10th October 2011 entitled "First Impressions of... Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto"[2] they wrote: "Harking back to the title track of their debut album, U.F.O is a melancholic interlude, Chris Martin's acoustic plucks joined by the swirl of strings halfway through, resembling a more saccharine take on Radiohead's Faust Arp. The escapism-themed lyrics ("let's fly/split the sky...") explain the title, just in case you were wondering if Chris Martin was about to grow a bed and start picketing outside Area 51 with Robbie Williams."

The Oracle on U.F.O.

January 30, 2012 - submitted by Jean, Puerto Rico
Q. Dear Oracle, my question is: Why haven't the boys played U.F.O., Don't Let It Break Your Heart and Up With The Birds live? They are part of the album and I feel as if they've been left out, please answer, back to you now.
The Oracle replies:
They have never played all the songs from an album. I'm pretty sure there was one song from each of the first four albums left out (Parachutes from Parachutes, A Whisper from AROBTTH, Twisted Logic from X&Y and Reign of Love from Viva la Vida).
I guess being part of an album doesn't necessarily mean part of a tour is a given. Some songs just don't work live or don't fit into the setlist.
I think your question could be changed to why haven't the boys played those songs yet. They still may; they've got a lot of dates. U.F.O and Up With The Birds could easily be X stage additions at least. It's too early to say whether they'll make an appearance though.

Lyrics

Lord I don't know which way I am going
Which way the river's going to flow
It just seems that upstream I keep rowing
Still got such a long way to go
Still got such a long way to go

And that light hits your eyes
I know I swear we'll find somewhere
The streets are paved with gold

Bullets fly split the sky
But that's alright sometimes sunlight comes streaming through the holes

Ohohoh
