Chris Martin performing Wedding Bells at Apple Keynote convention (1st September 2010

Wedding Bells was featured as a demo played by Chris Martin on Melvyn Bragg's South Bank Show that was aired on ITV in the UK on 20th September 2009.

First live performance

Apple CEO Steve Jobs used a performance by Chris Martin to help launch new Apple music products during the company's annual media event on September 1st, 2010. After rolling out a new lineup of iPod models, Chris Martin took the stage to perform Wedding Bells on piano (as well as Viva La Vida and Yellow) at the end of a press conference for the company's new products at the Yerba Buena Centre in San Francisco which was also screened live on TV screens at The Brewery in east London.

Introducing Wedding Bells, Chris who was wearing a white Flaming Lips t-shirt, joked: "This is a new song called 'Coldplay 2.6' and it has a lot of new features, it features seven different kinds of chords and even a new one that our closest rivals have no idea about," before adding: "This could be the only time you ever hear it. It could go terribly wrong but we'll see what happens."

Chris Martin described the song as the beginning of a story "that starts sadly, but that's the way these things should", possibly insinuating that Wedding Bells would be the first track on LP5.

The Oracle on Wedding Bells

Q. G'day Oracle,
I noticed in the song Christmas Lights that some of the lyrics used in the song were also from the unreleased song Wedding Bells.
Does this mean we will never see a finished version of Wedding Bells? It would be a shame if it wasn't.
Keep up the good work!
The Oracle replies:
I very much doubt it myself but never say never. It isn't uncommon for a song to end up with lyrics from a previously written one as they often lend themselves better. If Wedding Bells ever does make the light of day, I would say there'd be some adjustment to the lyrics.

Q. Hi! How are you?
You once said that a song that had already been released will not appear on a future album. So, neither Wedding Bells nor that "story kind of thing" (of which Wedding Bells is the beginning, as Chris explained on the Apple Keynote Event) will be part of the next album, right?
Thanks for all your answers!
Love,
Benjamin
The Oracle replies:
Not sure how your logic worked that out fella. Wedding Bells has not been released so it's not ruled out for inclusion on the 5th album; it's certainly been considered. Although that implies it will be on the album that's not necessarily the case either. Sorry for being cryptic but as you may know we don't generally reveal tracklistings until the album has been completed.

Lyrics

Those wedding bells are ringing up upon that hill
And I don’t wanna swallow such a bitter pill
You keep on moving, but, I stay still
But I always loved you and I always will

Days of no sleeping
Caked in mud
All kinds of poison in my blood
I lost the only thing I ever loved

Ohhh
I heard them ringing and processioning by
Umbrellas in the clear blue sky
I saw you swimming in that sea of white
Ohhh

And wedding bells ringing up upon that hill
And I don’t wanna swallow such a bitter pill
You keep on moving, baby, I stay still
I always loved you and I always will
Ohhh
I loved you and I see it still
I always loved you and I always will
Singing, lalalalalala

If everything that went before didn’t matter, so
Lalalalala
I always loved you and I always will.
