In May of 2015, several song titles were registered on ASCAP(The American Society Of Composers, Authors And Publishers) Fans linked them to LP7 as titles like Voldermort were related to the interview Chris Martin gave to Zane Lowe where he compared the new album to the Harry Potter books. Some other titles like Rastafarian Targaryen and Red Wedding were linked to the TV series Game of Thrones in which Will Champion made a cameo in the Red Wedding episode. Some newspapers also made reference to this fact stating that “The seventh album from Chris Martin and Coldplay could be a tribute to the fantasy series Game Of Thrones”[1]. Later it was revealed the band was involved in the first show of Red Nose Day in the USA.

Game of Thrones cast and Coldplay

The director Mat Whitecross was involved in the direction of some short films for the Red Nose. But the one which caught the attention of the viewers was the mockumentary of the band creating a spoof musical of Game of Thrones. Chris Martin wrote the original idea along with Richard Curtis. The conception was originated during the soundchecks the band did in their concerts as they are fans of the series and they used to sign the theme tune and change the lyrics to made them sound silly.
Mat Whitecross said in an interview that they work in a democratic way where the production team, the band members, and the cast of Game of Thrones gave ideas and Richard took and included them in the script.[2]

The band is working in a musical for Game of Thrones. They wrote original songs that they introduced to the cast who were not convinced it was a good idea such as Emilia Clarke who compared it to Titanic in terms of the unsuccessful movie. However, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) saved the recording inviting more members of the cast and even singing Wildling in front of them. The cast and the band members joined to sing Red Wedding and their enthusiasm hinted they could win a Tony award. At the end the whole cast was excited about the musical, however George R. Martin cancelled the project. But that did not stopped Chris Martin who suggested there might be a version of Taken on ice.

Coldplayer’ Reviews

I now officially ship Chris Martin and Jon snow
No seriously, there were so many awesome things in this video I can’t even begin to count them:
Will in a costume, him silently calling Chris an idiot, “You know nothing Chris Martin”
Oh and, in the beginning you see these giant colourful sheets in the background, when Chris and Will are sitting down. I believe these sheets are hiding the whiteboards that are probably covered with new album material! Thanks Batman

Excellent. My favourite moment was when Liam Neeson refers to Will as “bearded drummer Will Champion” in the most nonchalant way. Thanks MosesTheMarshmallow

My fav part id Chris fangirling / fanboying about Jon Snow
and Will calling him ” idot”
Jonny is so sweet ..bamm bamm bamm….The L.A. studio looking great. Thanks BuckinParadise

Omg, I’m not familiar with the GOT (I only know 2 actors, the hottest one, Jon Snow and the one which was in the Love Actually), but this sketch is fantastic!!
Coldplay did such a great job and they are good actors too, I mean, look at their serious faces (Guy’s poker face and then his acting during the Bastard song)! How could they stay so serious?
I love to see them all together, being so funny and doing charity work. Amazing. Thanks Nina8

UsMagazine: Then again, there may have one running gag that outdid even Roberts’s man voice: the production of Game of Thrones: The Musical. Not to be outdone by his ex, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin led a skit in which he spearheaded a Broadway musical based on the hit fantasy book and TV series. Some of the show’s most recognizable faces came out for the occasion, including Nikolaj Coster-Waldeau (who plays the aristocratic Jaime Lannister) and Emilia Clarke, who belted out a Rastafarian ode inspired by her Targaryen namesake.[3]

Forbes: When you play the game of thrones, you sing or you die.
Coldplay, NBC, and the cast of Game of Thrones have teamed up to make a pretty hilarious musical version of the hit HBO fantasy drama. Or rather, a “making-of” style mockumentary as part of a larger charity effort.
It’s pretty entertaining to watch a spirited acoustic trio with Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon,) Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen,) and Myranda (Charlotte Hope,) or listen to Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lanister) sing the first “romantic incest ballad” of Coldplay’s career.[4]

Billboard: So we know that the point of this whole skit was what a terrible idea a Game of Thrones musical would be — but are we alone in really wanting to see this on Broadway now? (Our favorite fake song title has to be “Rastafarian Targaryen.”) Coldplay’s Chris Martin got Kit Harington (John Snow), Emilia Clarke (Daenarys Targaryen), Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) and more of the cast to join in on the musical shenanigans.[5]
