Sheet music for Postcards From Far Away

Postcards From Far Away is an acoustic piano instrumental interlude written during sessions for Coldplay’s fourth album, Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends, but was left off the final album.

Part of the piano score for the song was released as downloadable wallpaper from coldplay.com’s Widgets section, allowing people to peform the track themselves. It was eventually released on the Prospekt’s March EP, some time after it became a regular part of the setlist for the Viva La Vida Tour.

It is regularly performed as an outro to the solo piano version of The Hardest Part, and the two songs were released together on LeftRightLeftRightLeft in 2009.

The Oracle on Postcards From Far Away

Q. Hey,
Postcards From Far Away is written by Chris Martin or Will Champion?
The Oracle replies:
This is a question that has popped up a few times recently. All songs are credited to the whole band but that particular piece is purely a piano composition so the band didn’t need to get involved as they do on other tracks; Chris wrote it.

Q. Dear Oracle.
I have an important question to you. Whenever my 9 years old brother hears Postcards From Far Away he says it can’t be considered as a song ’cause it have no words. What should I tell him?
Thank you, honorable Oracle.
The Oracle replies:
Well technically your son is correct, as a song is by definition a piece of music with lyrics. Postcards From Far Away is a composition but over time it’s commonly accepted that even without words we can call it a song.

Q. Dear Oracle!
I attended Coldplay’s concert in Strasbourg, and after The Hardest Part I realized that Chris was beginning to play Postcards From Far Away! Is this the whole song, or was it just an excerpt taken from the original song?
The Oracle replies:
The song is very short, clocking in at under a minute. It precedes Glass Of Water but is still a song in its own right, brief as it is.

Q. Hello Oracle! Can you please tell us if Postcards From Far Away is purely instrumental as presented on Tour or it has lyrics? GRACIAS!
The Oracle replies:
It is the same as the tour version. Sublime isn’t it? Some people assume it’s a classical piece and don’t realize it’s actually the aforementioned Postcards…
