Weight Loss Teas
It is not surprising to find hundreds of websites discussing weight loss with herbal teas. While tea alone will not help you shed those extra pounds, it can certainly help you burn unnecessary calories. A healthy diet combined with light exercise will definitely result in long term weight loss.
Those drinking 3-4 cups of weight loss teas in a day can expect to burn an additional 100 calories than they normally would. Of course, this isn’t a remarkable figure if you are looking to lose a lot of weight but it’s a good option for those who don’t have time to exercise. If you do the math, you could lose up to eight pounds in one year!
Most teas work using a biochemical process called thermogenesis, which is nothing but the production of heat due to which the body’s energy output increases. When this happens, fat cells are utilized for providing energy, thereby increasing metabolism and helping you burn fat.
Green tea is among the most well known weight loss teas. Its benefits have been written about by weight loss experts, fitness trainers, and physicians alike. Researchers in Japan and Netherlands have concluded that green tea is beneficial for reducing waistlines and lowering body mass index. This is because green tea is not fermented, allowing it to retain polyphenols and other fat fighting molecules.
A great option is to have a cup of green tea one or two hours before your workout routine. Doing this increases thermogenesis, allowing you to burn fat easily. If you do not exercise, drink green tea before daily chores like hoovering, cooking, or even doing the dishes.
The best way to have green tea is by brewing a tea bag in a cup of hot water. Do not use boiled water since it can make the tea bitter. It takes time to get used to the taste of green tea but adding honey helps in making it palatable.
Apart from weight loss, green tea is also helpful for treating low blood pressure and lowering the risk of ovarian cancer in women.
Oolong tea is derived from the same plant as green tea but unlike green tea, oolong tea is fermented. Physiologist William Rumpler of the U.S. Department of Agriculture conducted an independent study where a group of people were given four cups of oolong tea while another group was given four cups of water for three days. At the end of the study, those who drank oolong tea burned 67 calories daily and had a 12% fat oxidation rate, compared to water drinkers.
Another study at Linus Pauling Institute found that overweight men who drank either oolong tea or a combination of oolong tea and green tea for 12 weeks had a lower body mass index and waist circumference compared to those who had coffee, black tea or water.
Though oolong tea is fermented, it has a high concentration of polymerized polyphenols which increase metabolism and fat oxidation.
Don’t get sucked in by the marketing hype for oolong tea. It cannot result in overnight weight loss and drinking tea alone will not help you lose weight in a week. It is important to set realistic expectations when drinking weight loss teas. Tea grown in an exotic location will not be better than homegrown ones but you will end up shelling more money for it. Choose a brand that is affordable.
Oolong tea works best when taken one or two hours before your workout. It is also useful in curbing mid afternoon and mid evening hunger pangs.
Cinnamon has been used since the Egyptian era for its medicinal properties. Recently, the USDA found cinnamon to be helpful in reducing the risk of type II diabetes. This study also found that cinnamon lowers blood cholesterol levels. Overweight people have a tendency of storing energy as fat in the abdominal cells so cinnamon tea can be a wonderful weight loss tea for losing weight from the abdomen.
Instead of buying over the counter cinnamon extract or pills, buy whole or powdered cinnamon from your local grocery. Boil a teaspoon of cinnamon powder with a cup of water and your cinnamon tea is ready. Because cinnamon has a natural sweet flavor, there’s no need to add sugar or sweetener.
The use of cinnamon doesn’t need to be restricted only to tea. You can add it on toast, in cereal or even in your coffee.
Cinnamon is completely natural and had no side effects. However, if you have high blood sugar levels, consult your physician before using cinnamon.
Acai Berry Tea
Acai berry is a super food, next only to blueberries and avocadoes. It has a high amount of antioxidants that save the body from degenerative effects of free radicals. Though there is not a lot of research to support acai berry tea for weight loss, there is something else that makes this fruit so special.
Acai berry contains monounsaturated fats or MUFA’s which are useful for targeted weight loss in the abdomen area. However, a single acai berry contains very little MUFA to contribute to any significant weight loss.
Most advertisements about acai berry weight loss sell supplements which have a very low percentage of the berries. The Better Business Bureau recommends buying acai berry supplements from licensed health food stores as opposed to buying them online.
You can make tea with an acai berry extract just like you would make cinnamon tea. Other antioxidant rich fruits which have the same amount of antioxidants include blueberries and blackberries.
Weight loss teas hold a lot of promise but including them in your diet is not enough. You must have a healthy diet which includes fruits and vegetables. Eliminate the intake of processed foods and have at least eight glasses of water in a day. Doing all this will help you lose weight and reduce the risk of weight related diseases.
