Trivia

  • It has been said by the tabloid media that this song was about Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow’s relationship. But since, when played live, Chris Martin places an apple on his piano, it has been speculated that this song is really about his daughter, Apple.

Q. Is this the What If official video? Because the guy who is playing the piano doesn’t look like Chris.

Thanks!

P.S. Hope you come to Mexico soon!

The Oracle replies:

I’ve never seen that video before and while 7,634,258 is an impressive number of views, it’s nothing to do with us. Not only is the guy not Chris but there wasn’t an official video for What If made.

Q. Dear Oracle,

Like yourself, I love the song What If from X&Y. I don’t think they ever played this song live. Do you know why?

I will go to to concert in Zurich this Saturday and obviously hope that you can influence the guys to put this on their playlist 🙂

Best regards from a Dutch guy in Switzerland.

The Oracle replies:

It was played during the Twisted Logic tour back in 2005 but it wasn’t a permanent fixture on the setlist.

Last December it reappeared, much to my delight, on the European leg of the tour after a lengthy hiatus.

Q. Hi Oracle, I was watching on You Tube some Coldplay’s concerts and then I found this video Is this a promo video or what? Because the Chris Martin’s part is original! I would like you answer me to uncover the truth! Thanks a lot, greetings from Italy.

The Oracle replies:

It is not an official promo video. There has never been a video of someone else miming to Chris’ vocal part – that’s not him. Yes the song is the original but many people create their own videos for songs.

Q. Dear Oracle,

I have a rather interesting questions.

Wikipedia and the Wiki at Coldplaying.com seem to be under the illusion that ‘What If’ was released as a single, with Wikipedia also stating ‘White Shadows’ as another. Evidently, the Wikipedia has no wiki pages leading to the two – which would lead one to think someone has incorrectly edited the Coldplay page… until I realised that the Coldplaying Wiki had supplied cover artwork for What If. It even included a brief description of where it has been released. Has someone played a elaborate prank? It would seem so, as the code on the cover art is off-centered, unlike the others.

Thanks,

Joshua

The Oracle replies:

Sometimes singles are released in very few territories and that may be physical, digital or radio release only. That’s the case with the above singles. What If was released to radio in France, for example, and White Shadows was released to coincide with the Latin American tour of 2007.

Lyrics

What if there was no light.
Nothing wrong, nothing right.
What if there was no time?
And no reason or rhyme?
What if you should decide
That you don’t want me there by your side.
That you don’t want me there in your life.

What if I got it wrong?
And no poem or song..
Could put right what I got wrong,
Or make you feel I belong
What if you should decide
That you don’t want me there by your side
That you don’t want me there in your life.

Oooooh, that’s right
Let’s take a break jump over the side
Oooooh, that’s right
How can you know it if you don’t even try?
Oooooh, that’s right

Every step that you take
Could be your biggest mistake
It could bend or it could break
But that’s the risk that you take
What if you should decide
That you don’t want me there in your life.
That you don’t want me there by your side.

Oooooh, that’s right
Let’s take a break jump over the side.
Oooooh, that’s right
How can you know it when you don’t even try?
Oooooh, that’s right

Oooooh, that’s right
Let’s take a break jump over the inside
Oooooh, that’s right
You know that darkness always turns into light
Oooooh, that’s right.
